Job description

Robert Half is partnering with a client in the recruiting for a Payroll Tax Analyst to join their team. Seeking an individual with 5-10 years of payroll tax compliance and payroll operations experience, including multi-state payroll tax processing and support for high-volume employee population required. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely payroll tax filings, reconciliations, research, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.


This is a permanent placement opportunity offering competitive compensation package and a hybrid schedule.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage payroll tax compliance activities for federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
  • Process and reconcile payroll tax filings, deposits, amendments, and year-end reporting, including W-2s and related tax documents.
  • Support payroll processing in a multi-state environment with high employee volume and complex tax scenarios.
  • Research and resolve payroll tax notices, discrepancies, and agency inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Maintain tax account registrations and ensure compliance with changing payroll tax laws and regulations.
  • Perform account reconciliations related to payroll taxes, garnishments, and general ledger payroll accounts.
  • Partner with Payroll, HR, Finance, and external vendors to ensure accurate employee taxation and reporting.
  • Assist with audits, internal controls, process improvements, and documentation related to payroll tax operations.
  • Review payroll data for accuracy and identify issues related to tax withholding, reciprocity, local taxes, and employee work/resident locations.
  • Contribute to system testing, implementations, and upgrades impacting payroll tax functionality.


  • 5–10 years of payroll tax experience in a corporate payroll or shared services environment.
  • Hands-on experience with multi-state payroll tax compliance is required.
  • Experience supporting high-volume payroll operations is required - 3,500 employees+
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
  • Experience handling payroll tax reconciliations, tax filings, amendments, and notices.
  • Familiarity with payroll systems such as Workday, ADP, Ceridian, UKG, or similar platforms is preferred.
  • Strong Excel and analytical skills with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage deadlines, prioritize work, and solve complex tax issues independently.
  • CPP or FPC certification is a plus.
  • Education open/flexible; equivalent experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
