Job Summary
The Payroll and Financial Operations Specialist supports the University's financial operations with a primary emphasis on payroll processing and related financial activities. This position is housed within the Division of Finance and is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing while also supporting accounts payable and related financial functions.
Essential Job Duties
  • Process payroll transactions in accordance with established payroll calendars, policies, and wage and hour regulations.
  • Review and verify time records, stipends, supplemental pay, deductions, and payroll adjustments for accuracy and completeness.
  • Process payroll corrections and off-cycle payments as authorized.
  • Assist with payroll reconciliations, balancing, and variance analysis.
  • Support payroll tax reporting and year-end processes (e.g., W-2 preparation).
  • Respond to employee and departmental inquiries related to payroll payments and deductions.
  • Analyze payroll trends and recommend process improvements.
  • Interpret and apply federal and state wage and tax regulations.
  • Resolve complex payroll discrepancies independently.
  • Advise leadership on payroll compliance risks.
  • Develop and implement internal payroll controls.
  • Approve or deny payroll exceptions within delegated authority.

Qualifications (Education, Experience and Specialized Training)
  • High school diploma or equivalent required (associate' s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field preferred)
  • Two to four years of experience in payroll, accounts payable, or general accounting.
