Position Description
Job Summary: An Asphalt Paving Machine Operator is a skilled craft position. This position will o perate a asphalt paver machine. Position includes manipulating hand or foot levers to control the movements of the paving machine, which spreads and levels asphalt on subgrade highway and related surfaces such as parking lots, streets, etc. Paving Operator will be responsible for oil, grease, service and make normal operating adjustments to the equipment. May perform other related duties, such as adding or removing screed extensions, installing or removing automatic devices, and grade log or other accessories associated with the machine.
Essential Functions, skills and abilities:
  • Understand and execute paving procedures while following instructions to meet the standards of the project.
  • Must follow safe operation of paver.
  • Must be able to set screed sensors.
  • Must be able to determine the placement of materials correctly.
  • Daily maintenance (lubrication), keeping equipment clean, safe pre-start including daily fluid level checks on oil, water and fuel.
  • Responsible for daily maintenance of equipment to remain in proper and safe working order.
  • Responsible for notifying supervisor if equipment needs to be repaired.
  • Visual safety inspection for leaks and damage to machine before operation.
  • Understand, meet and plan grade cross slope requirements.
  • Understand the head of material for the screed.
  • Setting of flow.
  • Ability to be a leader.
  • Ability to operate equipment holding a straight line.
  • Keep equipment clean.
  • Proper paving speed to match truck delivery.
  • Adjust screed crown and strike off.
  • Set up and use automatic grade and slope control.
  • Understanding methods of paving to prevent segregation.
  • General knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems of the paver.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment safely and successfully.
  • Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts.

Position Requirements
Physical Condition:
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities such as: heavy lifting and climbing, operating motorized equipment and vehicles, work in confined spaces, work at heights, work around heavy construction equipment.
  • Maintain effective audio/visual judgement and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • The Operator must be able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.
