Job description

Join the Gaco team, a trusted name in building envelope solutions with a heritage dating back to 1955.

We're seeking a Principal Scientist - Adhesives & Tape Development who's ready to be part of a company committed to formulating everyday success for every customer through innovative, reliable products used to adhere, seal, and protect at every level of the building envelope.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking an experienced Principal Scientist to join our team in Norcross, GA. In this role, you will be the technical expert driving the development, testing, and optimization of our industrial and vacuum seal tape product lines. You will bridge the gap between R&D and the end-user, ensuring our tapes perform flawlessly in their intended environments. The ideal candidate will have deep familiarity with tape formulations, application processes, and hands-on troubleshooting.

WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH

  • Product Development & Formulation: Design and optimize tape formulations (including base elastomers, tackifiers, and high-temperature pigments) to meet strict adhesion, thermal, and autoclave requirements.
  • Application Engineering: Define, test, and document the optimal application processes for our tapes to ensure maximum performance and user success.
  • Troubleshooting & Defect Resolution: Act as the lead technical resource for troubleshooting manufacturing and customer issues. Identify root causes of failures such as loss of tack, outgassing, pigment bleeding, or cohesive failures, and implement corrective actions.
  • Performance Testing: Design and execute testing protocols to simulate real-world conditions (e.g., high-heat cure cycles, pressure testing, and chemical compatibility) to validate product reliability.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, and Sales teams to scale new products from lab formulation to full production, ensuring quality standards are maintained.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Education: Master's, or Ph.D. in Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Experience: 20+ years of direct experience formulating, testing, or applying industrial tapes, or pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs).
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of tape mechanics, surface energy, adhesion promoters, and rheology. Familiarity with composite manufacturing, autoclave curing, and vacuum bagging is highly preferred.
  • Problem-Solving: Proven track record of troubleshooting material failures and resolving complex chemical or mechanical application issues.
  • Communication: Ability to translate complex technical data into actionable advice for manufacturing teams and end-use customers.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Competitive salary

  • Retirement Savings: Choose from 401(k) pre-tax and/or Roth after-tax savings

  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan

  • Medical, Dental, Disability and Life Insurance

  • Holistic Health & Well-being programs

  • Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) & Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for health and dependent care

  • Vision and other Voluntary benefits and discounts

  • Paid time off & paid holidays

  • Paid Parental Leave (maternity & paternity)

  • Educational Assistance Program
