Job description

At the Indianapolis Zoo, our mission is to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world, and our volunteers play a vital role in bringing that mission to life every day. We're seeking a Volunteer Program Assistant to help recruit, train, and support the incredible volunteers who make our Zoo a special place for guests and wildlife.


About the Role

The Volunteer Program Assistant provides administrative and program support for the Zoo's Volunteer Services team. This position coordinates volunteer programs, lead orientations and trainings, maintain volunteer records, assist with our Zoo Teen and Group Volunteer programs, and help staff major Zoo events throughout the year. This is a part-time position, working 29 hours a week on a consistent schedule. Candidates must be available to work a flexible schedule including evenings and occasional weekends.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, selecting, onboarding, and supporting Zoo volunteers.
  • Coordinate and lead new volunteer orientations and training sessions.
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records and update information in the Zoo's volunteer database.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by responding to volunteer and public inquiries by phone, email, and in person.

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; candidates currently pursuing or holding an associate's or bachelor's degree are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience volunteering or working with volunteers (preferred).
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups and leading volunteer orientations and trainings.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accurate records.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills and basic database experience.
