Organizational Unit Overview
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the rural populations of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provide dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.
Job Duties
The Finance, Practice Management and Leadership Coordinator(FPMLC) for the ECU School of Dental Medicine plays a key role in the Leadership, Financial Literacy, and Business Management curriculum development and delivery. The individual directly provides content and leads educational sessions on topics related to personal and practice financial management, and coordinates and oversees presentations by selected expert speakers on more specialized topics related to various dental practice settings and career opportunities within oral health.
This position reports to the Dean of the SoDM, or the Dean's designee. In alignment with the mission of the School to prepare graduates for practicing in rural and underserved areas of North Carolina, this position supports students' understanding of the financial implications of future professional career decisions.
40% Presenting and leading sessions for first-, second-, and third-year students on such topics as:
  • Financial literacy
  • Personal finance
  • Business foundations
  • Debt and wealth management
  • Strategic planning
  • Business plan development

30% Coordinating and curating presentations by invited speakers on such topics as:
  • Practice leadership
  • Practice financial management
  • Principles of practice success
  • Legal and regulatory concepts
  • Transition planning

10% Coordinating, supporting, and evaluating the third-year dental students' business plan preparation and presentations:
  • Develop and deliver the Practice Management Curriculum for third-year dental students (year-long course) devoted to understanding the business of dental practice.
  • Strengthen students' knowledge of educational debt and the economics of dental practice to equip them to make sound financial and business decisions throughout their professional careers.
  • Provide leadership and guidance for the CSLC Business Managers in reinforcing the skills that the students will need to be leaders in their communities.

10% Coordinating and evaluating D4 students' CSLC reflections related to finance, practice management, and leadership.
10% Interfacing with the School of Dental Medicine faculty and the Community Service Learning Center Business Managers to reinforce Dental Practice curriculum in comprehensive care clinics and in CSLCs.
Contingent upon the availability of funds.
Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b, 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS). Additionally, this position offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability.
While this position is not automatically eligible for the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS), new hires transferring from another North Carolina state agency and current ECU employees transferring internally who had been enrolled in TSERS in their previous employment will continue participation in TSERS. These individuals may be able to elect to participate in ORP if they had not been offered that option at the time of their initial enrollment into TSERS.
Minimum Education/Experience
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Business Administration, Banking and Finance or related field; or DMD/DDS; or will accept in substitution a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Banking and Finance, or related field and two years of relevant experience.
  • Additionally, three years of experience in financial administration and management (including dental practice) and/or banking.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
