What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Worker Under 18, and why are they important?

To thrive as a part-time worker under 18, you typically need reliability, basic math and communication skills, and, in some cases, a work permit or age verification. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, cash registers, or simple scheduling software is often helpful depending on the job. Strong soft skills such as punctuality, teamwork, and a positive attitude help young workers stand out. These abilities ensure that under-18 employees can perform tasks responsibly, contribute to a positive workplace, and comply with legal requirements for young workers.

What types of responsibilities are typically assigned to part-time employees under 18, and how do employers ensure tasks are age-appropriate?

Part-time employees under 18 are usually assigned responsibilities that comply with labor laws and focus on safety, such as stocking shelves, cashiering, cleaning, or basic food service tasks. Employers ensure all duties meet legal restrictions for minors, avoiding hazardous equipment or late-night shifts. Supervisors often provide extra guidance and training to help young employees adapt and succeed, creating a supportive environment for learning and skill development. This approach not only safeguards young workers but also gives them valuable work experience.

What are part-time jobs for individuals under 18?

Part-time jobs for individuals under 18 are employment opportunities designed for teenagers who are not yet legal adults. These jobs typically have limited hours and are structured to comply with child labor laws, which restrict the types of work, the number of hours, and the times of day young people can work. Common roles include babysitting, retail assistant, fast food worker, grocery store clerk, or lawn care. These positions provide valuable work experience, responsibility, and the opportunity to earn extra money while balancing school commitments.

Can I work at 15?

In Missouri, minors aged 14 and 15 can work limited hours and in specific jobs under state and federal child labor laws. For part-time roles, such as entry-level or retail positions, 15-year-olds typically need work permits and must adhere to restrictions on hours and types of work. Employers often require proof of age and compliance with labor regulations for minors.
