The part-time, temporary Dentist supports and enhances the mission of the Dental Department and provides additional leadership and management support for the Dental Clinics. In collaboration with the Dental Director and Program Directors, the part-time, temporary Dentist will contribute to continuous review, planning, and general effectiveness of the programs, and accreditation guidance. Instructional responsibilities require a broad-based knowledge of the field of study in dental assisting and dental hygiene. The part-time, temporary Dentist reports to the Dental Director.
Duties/Functions
Clinical
Provide clinical services to include:
  • providing clinical coverage as a dentist within an educational setting
  • providing consultation/supervision of dental assisting/hygiene faculty and students.
  • reviewing and evaluating patient medical histories as needed
  • overseeing matters related to medically compromised patients
  • suggesting treatment modifications as needed
  • making referrals to appropriate medical staff for medically compromised patients and/or the evaluation of medical conditions
  • diagnosing clinical dental decay
  • prescribing and interpreting dental radiographs
  • evaluating dental treatment documentation
  • prescribing pit and fissure sealants, evaluating and adjusting pit and fissure sealants as needed
  • providing local anesthesia within the dental hygiene clinic
  • interpreting dental clinical pathology
  • providing basic restorative dental treatment on clinical patients
  • preparing dental consultative referrals when required
  • documenting clinical findings in EagleSoft patient documentation system
  • auditing patient chart records for compliance
  • auditing accounts receivable documentation for the dental clinic

Clinical Facilities
Provide oversight of facilities and equipment to include:
  • maintaining classroom and laboratory spaces including upkeep of assigned equipment
  • providing for the security of facilities, equipment and instructional materials and maintaining safe working conditions
  • evaluating and recommending clinical and instructional equipment to enhance student learning
  • maintaining equipment, recommending repair as needed and if possible
  • complying with all applicable college, state and federal rules and regulations

Professional Development
Maintain a professional status that supports the instructional mission by:
  • participating in professional development activities to maintain currency in field; maintaining current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation
  • participating in professional development opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies.

Student Support
Provide an environment conducive to student success to include:
  • promoting retention/persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success
  • referring students to campus and community resources when appropriate
  • addressing student concerns and mediating when necessary

Demonstrating and modeling the College's employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintain student records.
  • Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor
Difficult Challenges Contacts Education Required
  • Doctor of Dental Science or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from an institutionally accredited college/university
  • Current unrestricted license to practice as a dentist in North Carolina or eligibility for licensure in North Carolina
Education Preferred Experience Required
  • Three years of clinical experience as a licensed dentist
  • Experience in providing oversight for students in a clinical setting
Experience Preferred
  • Greater than three years of clinical experience as a licensed dentist
KSA Required

Specific departmental requirements:
1. Bloodborne pathogen/personal protective equipment
2. Emergency action plan and use of emergency equipment
3. Required immunizations
Physical Demands
1. Hear and see
2. Standing required for extended periods (up to 4 hours)
3. Stoop, bend, squat, lift, reach overhead
Other:
1. Acceptable results on background screening consisting of Criminal Background Check and drug screen if required by the College.
2. Current CPR (BLS) certification
