Job description

Position Title:

Adjunct, Religious Studies

Time Type:

Part time

Position Summary and Qualifications:

Saint Joseph's University's Department of Theology and Religious Studies has an ongoing need for highly qualified adjunct faculty to staff a variety of courses each semester in Religious Studies. Professionals with experience and a passion for teaching college undergraduates will be given preference. Individuals should be familiar with the University's mission as Jesuit and Catholic and comfortable working within that milieu. At the same time, applicants should be aware that theology, as taught in this institution, does not assume any particular religious background and emphasizes critical thinking and careful analytical skills.

Part-time adjunct faculty may instruct 1 or 2 courses each semester on an "as needed" basis. Courses available for adjunct staffing are offered during the day and also in the evening in 14 week format, occasionally online.

Courses available for adjunct staffing may include:

  • Islam

  • Judaism

  • Hinduism

  • Buddhism

  • Hebrew Bible

  • Comparative Religion

  • Indigenous religions

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching of specified course(s)

  • Preparation of all teaching materials

  • Reporting mid-semester and final grades electronically

  • Providing course specific support and guidance to student

  • Cooperating with course coordinators or other program faculty to assure quality and consistency across the program

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in Religious Studies or closely related majors.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ABD or PhD in Religious Studies.

  • Previous teaching experience.

  • Willingness to be flexible in class scheduling.
