Job Description Summary & Additional Information
Organizational Summary:
The Part-Time Payroll Services Coordinator supports payroll operations for the Robert H. Smith School of Business, serving a population of over 1,000 active employees, including faculty, exempt and non-exempt staff, and student employees. This position assists with payroll processing and performs transactional payroll responsibilities to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant compensation practices. The role works closely with the Payroll HR Shared Service Manager and other stakeholders to support college-wide payroll operations.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with payroll processing for faculty, staff, and student employees.
Process Workday appointments and related payroll transactions.
Calculate, initiate, and prepare payroll adjustments, including:
  • Period Activity Pay (PAP) for appointment and overloads
  • Supervisor organization changes
  • Terminations
  • Summer pay and summer school compensation
  • Create employment contracts and route them through Adobe Sign.
  • Support payroll audits, reconciliation activities, and reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and university payroll regulations and policies.
  • Assist the Payroll HR Shared Service Manager with special projects and operational needs.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Payroll experience in higher education.
  • Experience with Workday.
  • Experience working at the University of Maryland (UMD).
  • Knowledge of UMD human resources and payroll policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience: One (1) year of professional payroll experience.
Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.
Knowledge of payroll policies and procedures, and federal, state, and other applicable payroll related laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances.
Knowledge of payroll functions.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.
Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments.
Ability to analyze situations and determine the best recourse for response.
