Job description

The Student Extern at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center supports Application Services teams while gaining hands-on experience in a dynamic IT environment. The Student Extern contributes to troubleshooting, systems maintenance, and technology support, helping ensure reliable application performance. The Student Extern role offers exposure to real-world technical operations and collaboration across multiple teams within EDI.
The ideal candidate is a currently enrolled student who is technically curious and eager to learn, with an interest in application support and IT operations. This individual demonstrates foundational problem-solving abilities, strong learning agility, and a willingness to develop technical and professional skills in a real-world environment. Exposure to systems, troubleshooting, or IT-related coursework is beneficial.
Minimum $18.00 - Midpoint $18.50 - Maximum $19.00
The typical work schedule is Part-time, up to 19 hours per week
Work Location: Primarily remote; must be available to attend onsite department meetings as needed

Responsibilities
Analysis, Diagnosis, & Problem Solving
• Analyze source documents, database structures, and management reporting requirements
• Assist in diagnosing system issues and identifying technical solutions
• Monitor system health and performance and support improvement initiatives
• Support resolution of hardware, software, operating system, and integration issues
• Apply analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot technical challenges
Technical Support & Environment Maintenance
• Assist with operating system updates and patch management activities
• Document system environments, configurations, and operational processes
• Support maintenance and updates of application and server environments
• Contribute to improvements in system performance, stability, and security
Additional Responsibilities
• Perform other duties and support special projects as assigned
EDUCATION
  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent and
  • Required: College bound or in-college students.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's or Masters' in IT, Computer Science, Computer engineer, MIS, Business, Business Analytics or similar.

WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Required: None
  • Preferred: Familiar with AI tools and technology, analytical mind set, excellent communication skills, problem solving and quick learner. Under grad junior or senior, or graduate.
  • Prefer a local candidate in Houston Texas or surrounding area.
