Job description

Position Overview:

Onyx Aerospace is seeking Mechanical Engineers at multiple experience levels to support a major Department of Defense infrastructure program in multiple locations. These roles focus on the design, development, and procurement of complex mechanical systems, including piping, HVAC, chilled water, fire protection, and specialized equipment supporting mission-critical facilities.

This opportunity is ideal for engineers who thrive in highly technical, regulated environments and enjoy working across the full lifecycle—from design and analysis through procurement, vendor coordination, and construction support. Engineers will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, customers, and suppliers to ensure technical excellence, compliance with industry codes, and successful project execution.

Multiple positions are different levels are anticipated.

Key Responsibilities:

Mechanical System Design & Analysis

  • Develop and review mechanical designs for piping, HVAC, fire protection, and specialty systems
  • Perform engineering calculations, system sizing, and technical evaluations
  • Create and review P&IDs, equipment data sheets, engineering specifications, and material requisitions

Procurement & Vendor Management

  • Develop technical requirements and support equipment procurement activities
  • Evaluate vendor proposals and support supplier selection
  • Review vendor submittals and manage technical performance through delivery

System Integration & Coordination

  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, construction, and clients
  • Support resolution of technical issues across system interfaces
  • Participate in design reviews, construction support, and commissioning activities

Compliance & Code Application

  • Ensure designs comply with UFC, ASME, NFPA, ASHRAE, SMACNA, and related codes
  • Support quality programs such as ASME NQA-1 or AS9100

Documentation & Technical Deliverables

  • Prepare engineering reports, calculations, and technical documentation
  • Support development of specifications and procedures

Leadership (Senior / Lead Levels)

  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior engineers
  • Support planning, scheduling, and execution of engineering work

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Experience in mechanical system design, engineering documentation, or procurement
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and codes
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Experience Levels

  • Mid-Level: ~5+ years
  • Senior-Level: ~8+ years
  • Lead-Level: Demonstrated leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting DoD or federal programs
  • Familiarity with UFC, ASME, NFPA, ASHRAE, SMACNA
  • Experience in regulated industries (nuclear, energy, industrial)
  • PE license or ability to obtain
  • Experience with NQA-1 or AS9100
  • Active clearance or ability to obtain
