Summary: The Underwriter III serves as an experienced centralized lending authority responsible for evaluating, approving, and structuring complex consumer loan requests while ensuring sound credit quality and compliance with established lending policies. This position exercises a high level of independent judgment in underwriting loan transactions ranging from approximately $50,000 to $500,000, balancing member service with prudent risk management.
In addition to underwriting responsibilities, the Underwriter III actively monitors portfolio performance, contributes to lending strategy and policy development, mentors less experienced underwriters, and participates in initiatives that enhance operational effectiveness, credit quality, and the overall member lending experience.
Work location and hours: This position is based at our Headquarters office in Bedford, Texas. Participation in a hybrid work arrangement may be approved by WCU leadership. Work hours may vary but are generally Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm. This is an exempt-level position and subject to a work schedule which provides appropriate coverage during normal WCU hours of operation, including Saturdays as needed.
Main duties and responsibilities include: analyze and underwrite complex consumer loan applications, including direct and indirect loans, home equity products, secured and unsecured loans, and other consumer lending products within assigned authority limits; decision loan applications in accordance with lending policies and delegated authority; support initiatives to improve portfolio performance and maintain acceptable levels of credit risk; promote consistency in underwriting decisions and adherence to established credit standards; recommend process improvements that increase efficiency while maintaining strong risk controls; participate as a member of the Credit Committee or other designated lending committees; and ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state lending regulations.
Requirements and qualifications: 2 to 4 years of direct loan underwriting experience in a financial institution, preferably a credit union. Demonstrated experience underwriting complex consumer lending transactions and exercising independent lending authority. Deep understanding of lending regulations and compliance. Advanced knowledge of consumer lending principles, credit analysis, and risk assessment. Ability to interpret complex credit reports, tax returns, financial statements, and supporting documentation. Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly explain lending decisions. Ability to negotiate loan structures while maintaining acceptable risk parameters. Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple complex transactions. Proficiency with loan origination systems, automated underwriting tools, and Microsoft Office applications.
Education and certifications: A degree in business, finance, or a related field is preferred, but relevant experience is the key consideration. One or more of the following certifications are highly desirable: Certified Credit Union Business Lending Professional (CUBLP), Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor (CCUFC), National Association of Mortgage Underwriters Certified Master Underwriter (NAMU-CMU), other applicable lending, underwriting, or credit risk certifications.
