About Us
Middle Georgia State University (MGA), a multi-campus, baccalaureate and graduate degree-granting public institution, is the most affordable public state university in Georgia. MGA has five campuses-Macon, Cochran, Dublin, Eastman, and Warner Robins, all located in central Georgia-and global outreach through its fully-online campus. Its enrollment of 8,400 students is largely comprised of students from most of Georgia's 159 counties. The University has six academic schools, including Georgia's flagship aviation program, that support its mission to educate and graduate inspired, lifelong learners whose scholarship and careers enhance the state.
Job Summary
This position provides general library assistance and reference services in the library during evening hours. The reference assistant does not normally work during intersessions (between semesters), spring breaks, during holiday periods, or other times when the university/library is closed. However, opportunities to do so may occasionally arise. The reference assistant will primarily work evening hours until the library closes at 12 a.m., a maximum of 19 hours per week.
Responsibilities
Research Assistance (30%) -
Provides research assistance utilizing a variety of information resources in person, over the phone, and online
Circulation Duties (30%) -
Performs circulation duties, as this position is based at a combined reference/circulation service desk
Accepts fines and fees, edits record(s) as appropriate, notifies supervisory staff, and creates receipts
Technology Assistance (20%) -
Assists library patrons with troubleshooting technology issues as needed (computers, printers, scanners, etc.)
Assists library patrons with troubleshooting software issues as needed (Microsoft Office, email, Brightspace/D2L, etc.)
Other Duties (20%) -
Assists with training and supervision of library student assistants in the evenings and weekends
Opens and closes the library when scheduled
May assist in selecting library materials for purchase
Performs related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent
Required Experience
College level research experience required
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Educational Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
2-3 years general work experience in a school or library environment or current enrollment in an MLS/MLIS program
Preferred Experience
Experience using GALILEO
Experience with an academic library setting
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge of print and electronic reference sources (preferably GALILEO)
Knowledge of best practices for providing exemplary customer service to a broad population of library patrons
Skill in email communication
Skill in standard software applications, such as Microsoft Office
Skill in written and oral communication, including presentation skills
Comfortable with various technologies and programs including wikis, blogs, etc.
