JOB TITLE: Academic Intervention Tutor (Math/English)

STATUS: Part-time, 222 Workdays per year

REPORTS TO: College and Career Coordinator

CAMPUS: Pandaland, G3, Mainland & MIT Campus at Vaughn Next Century Learning Center

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent. 

POSITION OVERVIEW

Vaughn Next Century Learning Center is seeking a dedicated and student-centered Expanded Learning Intervention Tutor to join our team. This role is focused on providing targeted academic support, designing engaging learning opportunities, and ensuring that all students are equipped with the skills they need for college, career, and lifelong success.

The ideal candidate is passionate about education, skilled in delivering effective intervention strategies, and committed to supporting diverse learners. They will bring creativity, strong communication, and leadership skills to develop tutoring sessions that foster academic growth, personal development, and future readiness.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Implementation

  • Provide one-on-one and/or small group academic tutoring and mentoring during before school or in after school program settings, depending on school site needs.
  • Build and maintain professional and supportive relationships with teachers, administrators, students, parents, and community partners.
  • Maintain consistent communication with school staff and CCSP program staff to support student success.
  • Supervise program participants to ensure a safe, welcoming, and organized learning environment.
  • Collaborate with teachers and program staff in the planning and delivery of lesson plans, enrichment activities, and project-based learning.
  • Assist with academic advising, college and career exploration activities, and support during events and presentations.
  • Follow all workplace safety and program compliance guidelines.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings, trainings, and events on- and off-site.
  • Perform other program-related duties as assigned.
  • Availability to work some evenings and/or weekends as needed for special events.

Data Management & Monitoring

  • Maintain accurate daily attendance records for all program participants.
  • Track and log tutoring, mentoring, and enrichment activity data.
  • Assist with the collection of student and family program information and required documentation.
  • Review and utilize CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) data to monitor progress toward program goals and benchmarks, working with lead staff to identify and resolve challenges.
  • Support the preparation and completion of reports as required by the program.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong academic skills in English Language Arts and/or Mathematics.
  • Knowledge of public-school standards and Expanded Learning Programs
  • Effective communication skills and demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Ability to assist students with academic assignments, study skills, and postsecondary readiness activities.
  • Ability to collaborate with administrators, teachers, parents, and students.
  • Experience in planning and implementing lesson plans and/or student activities.
  • Self-motivated, dependable, and professional in conduct and attitude.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • 48 college semester units successfully completed or pass a local assessment of knowledge and skills test required.
  • Successful completion of college-level English and Math (Algebra II or higher) strongly preferred.
  • At least one year of experience working with school-age youth in academic, enrichment, or after-school program settings required.
  • At least one year of paid or volunteer experience in tutoring, mentoring, or youth development, preferably with middle school or high school students required.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • $22 an Hour
  • Sick Time Accrual

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Upon receiving an offer of employment: 

  • Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan) with the Department of Justice (DOJ) 
  • Must provide a Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) clearance within 60 days of employment
  • Will be assigned mandated state training to be completed prior to the first day of employment
