Job Details

The ChristianaCare Language Services department is currently recruiting for a Part-time American Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) to serve deaf and hard of hearing patients and staff, rendering information accurately and completely in compliance with all the CC Language Services and CC hospital policies and procedures.

The ideal candidate will understand a variety of signing and spoken styles and registers and interpret with the highest degree of accuracy and completeness. They will demonstrate cultural competency and understand language as an expression of culture, recognize the underlying assumptions of each party about medicine, the encounter, the illness etc. and use this understanding to empower patient and provider to better understand each other. In addition, have the ability to work well under pressure and manage stressful situations.

Position Details:

  • Hours: 24 hours per week, with potential for additional hours (depending on the needs)

  • Shift: Day shift, with paid on-call requirement every two weeks

  • Location: Based in Newark, DE, with rotation to Wilmington, DE, and Elkton, MD; other ChristianaCare locations as needed by appointment

  • On-Call: Nights and weekends required during on-call weeks; pay differential applies

  • Additional Benefits: Annual stipends for uniforms and certification CEUs

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required. An associate degree or college work in ASL or any area related to science or human services highly desired.

  • Fluency in American Sign Language and English, the latter both oral and written.

  • One to two years' experience in a healthcare setting as a medical interpreter, preferred

  • Certification Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) preferred

Hourly Pay Range: $30.34 - $48.55This pay rate/range represents ChristianaCare's good faith and reasonable estimate of compensation at the time of posting. The actual salary within this range offered to a successful candidate will depend on individual factors including without limitation skills, relevant experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
