What does a part time instructional designer do?

A part time instructional designer creates and develops educational materials and learning experiences, such as online courses, training modules, or workshops, on a flexible or reduced hours schedule. They work with subject matter experts to design curriculum, select appropriate instructional technologies, and assess the effectiveness of learning programs. Their responsibilities often include writing content, building interactive activities, and ensuring materials meet learning objectives—all while balancing their workload with limited weekly hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time instructional designer?

To thrive as a Part Time Instructional Designer, you need expertise in instructional design principles, curriculum development, and often a background in education or a related field. Familiarity with e-learning authoring tools (such as Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate), learning management systems (LMS), and sometimes certifications like CPLP or ATD are typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and time management skills help you effectively collaborate and deliver engaging learning experiences on a flexible schedule. These skills ensure instructional materials are effective, engaging, and meet the learning objectives within project constraints.

How do part time instructional designers typically collaborate with subject matter experts and other team members?

Part-time instructional designers often work closely with subject matter experts (SMEs), project managers, and multimedia specialists to develop effective learning materials. While schedules may be more flexible, strong communication skills and efficient online collaboration are essential to ensure alignment on project goals and timelines. Many teams use project management tools and regular check-ins to stay coordinated, making it possible for part-time designers to contribute meaningfully alongside full-time colleagues. Building strong relationships and being proactive in communication helps overcome the challenge of reduced on-site presence.

Job Description:

Job Title: Bakery Cake Designer

About Hy-Vee

At Hy-Vee, we believe the shortest distance between two people is a smile. We're seeking people with a passion for customer service, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to being part of a team that strives to make our customers' lives easier, healthier and happier.

The Role and Why It's Important

At Hy-Vee, our bakery department helps customers celebrate life's biggest moments, and our Bakery Cake Designers are at the heart of making those moments special. In this role, you'll use your creativity and decorating skills to bring customer visions to life, from birthday cakes and everyday treats to wedding cakes delivered and set up on site. You'll also serve as a lead for part-time employees and collaborate closely with the bakery team to keep production running smoothly.

If you have a passion for decorating, an eye for detail, and enjoy working with customers to create something memorable, we'd love to have you on our team.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting every customer with a smile, taking orders at the bakery counter, and assisting them with their needs throughout the store

  • Check orders for the day, set up a timeline and production schedule, and check cake orders daily for details including size, deco pack, icing needs, and dates

  • Decorate bakery items in a timely manner, keeping current on new designs and trends

  • Develop daily bakery orders for bakers including cakes and sizes needed

  • Track daily retail production and identify tasks to be completed with co-workers

  • Check product dates, pull cases for work, and list items to fill or replace

  • Order supplies for the decorating area and check off the order upon receipt

  • Deliver product and set up wedding cakes on site outside the store

  • Communicate with the Bakery Manager daily regarding displays, weekly ads, and special needs

  • Operate as a lead with part-time and other employees by instructing and reviewing their work

  • Participate in employee cross-training

  • Practice proper sanitation procedures and keep the work area clean, neat, and safe at all times

  • Answer the phone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call, including taking product orders

  • Follow Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all department and company guidelines

  • Pitch in with other tasks or special projects as they come up

Your Skills

To be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to:

  • Bring commitment to Hy-Vee's mission and a genuine passion for delivering an outstanding customer experience

  • Apply strong decorating skills and stay current on cake design trends and techniques

  • Solve practical problems and follow instructions carefully in a fast-paced environment

  • Apply math skills including fractions, decimals, and percentages in day-to-day tasks

  • Lead and guide part-time employees, providing instruction and reviewing their work

  • Communicate clearly with customers, co-workers, and the Bakery Manager

Reporting Relationships

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, Health Wellness Home; Bakery Department Manager

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent experience

  • Six months or less of similar or related work experience; we'll provide all the training you need to succeed

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This is a fast-moving role with significant pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities. You'll work in the bakery department and can expect exposure to flour dust, noise, temperature extremes, cleaning chemicals and solvents, and residual fumes. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
