Key Responsibilities

Correctional Health Services is hiring for an Occupational Therapy Assistant. This is a paraprofessional, working level job supervised by professional Occupational Therapy staff. Incumbents in this job are assigned client assessments and treatment plans and administer appropriate treatment to clients. Incumbents may conduct individual sessions, therapy groups, and contribute to OT program administration.
Job Duties
  • Must possess certification by the American Occupational Therapy Licensure from the Utah Occupational Therapy License Board.
  • Evaluates patients' needs and administers therapy to preserve and improve abilities for independent function, such as, behavioral management skills, social skills, distress tolerance, medication adherence, sensory self-regulation and activities of daily living.
  • Coordinates program activities, services, and/or program implementation with private providers, other governmental entities, program users, etc.
  • Performs occupational assessments of patients and/or residents; refers patients requiring further evaluation or treatment to a registered nurse, nurse practitioner,therapist, physician, psychiatrists or other health care professional.
  • Develops and implements treatment plans to help clients mobilize inner capacities and resources to improve social functioning.
  • Documents client/patient progress and revises treatment plans as required; completes administrative paperwork.

  • An offer of employment will be contingent on the applicant successfully passing a DHHS background check, pre-employment drug testing, and a Utah Department of Corrections (UDC) background screening.
  • Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
  • Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.

Qualifications
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
    Strong interpersonal boundaries and the ability to set these boundaries with clients
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Talking to others to convey information effectively.
  • Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Actively looking for ways to help people.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
  • The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions, and for career counseling and guidance.
  • The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
