Job description

Adjunct/ Part time Instructor in History

About Augustana College:

Augustana College is a private, selective, residential liberal arts and sciences college with an enrollment of approximately 2,500 students. Our scenic 115-acre campus is located in Rock Island, Illinois, part of the Quad Cities metropolitan area along the Mississippi River, about 165 miles west of Chicago. The Quad Cities region has a population of approximately 450,000.

Augustana offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in nearly 100 majors and related academic programs, as well as a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology. Our student body includes 25% first-generation college students, 24% Pell Grant recipients, 24% students of color, and 20% international students. Strengthening our inclusive and welcoming community is central to the college’s mission and strategic plan.

We seek candidates who are committed to fostering academically challenging, inclusive, and high-impact learning environments that support and engage a diverse student body.

The Position:

The Augustana College Department of History seeks a qualified instructor to teach two sections of History 130: Rethinking American History to 1877 in the Spring of 2027.

Those two sections will run from February 4 to May 22, 2027, with exam week running from May 18 to May 22 and grades due to the Registrar at noon on May 26, 2027. Our sections count for 4-credits and typically run for 75 minutes three days a week or 100 minutes two days a week. We are willing to work with the selected instructor to find viable meeting times for their two sections.

The course description is as follows: HIST-130 Rethinking American Hist, to 1877 (4 Credits). Almost everything most people know about American history is at worst, wrong, and at best, oversimplified. This course examines enduring problems, powerful stories, and common misconceptions about the American past. Students will learn a set of problem-solving skills that historians use to make sense of the past, so that they can reach their own conclusions and recognize sense from nonsense.

More information about the department can be found online at: History | Augustana College.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach an 8-credit course load consisting of two in-person sections of HIST 130.

Requirements:

What We're Looking For:

  • MA or Ph.D. required; specialization in American History or related field preferred.
  • Dedication to teaching BA students from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Previous teaching experience

Why Augustana?
At Augustana, you'll find a supportive and collegial environment where faculty thrive professionally and personally. Our small class sizes foster deep connections between faculty and students.

Additional Information:

The budgeted compensation for this position(s) is dependent upon enrollment at the below rates. (Compensation is contingent on meeting the enrollment threshold and is reduced if minimum enrollments are not met.)

  • $1400 per credit for part-time instructors without a terminal degree.
  • $1500 per credit for part-time instructors with a terminal degree (PhD in History or a related field).
  • This position is not eligible for benefits.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. In particular, applicants who require the H-1B visa cannot be considered, and applicants who require sponsorship for visas other than the H-1B visa will be required to pay all costs associated with visa applications.
