Part-time medical coders typically earn between $15 and $25 per hour, depending on experience, certifications, and the complexity of coding tasks. Salaries can vary based on location and whether they work remotely or on-site, with some earning higher rates for specialized coding or advanced certifications like CPC (Certified Professional Coder).

What are the typical responsibilities and workflow for a part-time Certified Professional Coder (CPC) within a healthcare organization?

Part-time CPCs are primarily responsible for reviewing medical records and assigning accurate codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services to ensure proper billing and compliance. They typically collaborate with physicians and billing teams to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies. Part-time roles often require flexibility in managing workloads and may involve remote work or split shifts. While the hours are reduced, attention to detail and adherence to ever-evolving coding guidelines remain critical for success. This position can be a great entry point to full-time opportunities or advancement into auditing or supervisory roles in medical coding.

What jobs can I get with my CPC?

A Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential qualifies individuals for medical coding roles in healthcare settings, such as medical coder, billing specialist, or coding auditor. These jobs involve reviewing medical records, assigning appropriate codes for diagnoses and procedures, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. CPC holders often work in hospitals, clinics, or insurance companies, and may need familiarity with coding software and medical terminology.

What are Part Time CPCs?

Part Time CPCs are professionals who hold a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential and work less than full-time hours in medical coding roles. They review and assign standardized codes to patient diagnoses and procedures to ensure accurate billing and insurance reimbursement. Part Time CPCs typically work in hospitals, clinics, or remotely for healthcare organizations, offering flexibility for those balancing other commitments. Their expertise helps healthcare providers comply with regulations and optimize revenue cycles.

Can medical coding be a side job?

Part-time medical coding is a common side job for professionals with certification in coding and familiarity with coding tools like ICD-10 and CPT. It offers flexible scheduling and can be done remotely, making it suitable for those seeking additional income alongside other employment. However, maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Certified Professional Coder (CPC), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Certified Professional Coder (CPC), you need a thorough understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, coding guidelines, and a CPC certification from AAPC. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, coding software, and insurance billing platforms is essential. Attention to detail, integrity, and effective communication help ensure accuracy and collaboration with healthcare teams. These skills are crucial for compliant, efficient coding and reimbursement, reducing errors and supporting quality patient care.
