Job description

Join the future of news
We're on a mission to deliver riveting storytelling for all of America. At The Washington Post, you'll help reinvent news. Our work is driven by a deep investigative spirit and enhanced by innovation to bring audiences closer to the stories that matter most.
About Our Team
The Washington Post is powered by the passion and talent of our people. It takes all of us to reinvent news. Beyond our award-winning News and Opinions teams, we work across many departments, including Brand & Events, Communications, Customer Care, Engineering & Product, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing & Advertising, Print Operations, and Sales.
Why This Role Matters
The Washington Post is seeking a skilled editor with a passion for journalism and global press freedom issues to help shape and refine our Press Freedom newsletters and social video content. This temporary, hourly position averages approximately 5 hours per week and offers the opportunity to contribute to one of The Post's most meaningful efforts-illuminating threats to press freedom and examining the state of independent journalism worldwide.
As the editor for these Press Freedom products, you will review, refine, and help produce concise, high-quality newsletters and social videos that engage audiences and reflect The Post's editorial standards. This role is suited to a meticulous editor with a strong sense of narrative flow, attention to accuracy, and a creative approach to personality-driven content that weaves together news, opinion, and talent-first storytelling.
What Motivates You
  • You care deeply about press freedom and the rights of journalists to operate independently worldwide.
  • You have a strong editorial eye and take pride in producing accurate, polished writing and visual content.
  • You enjoy refining voice and tone across formats, ensuring each product feels distinct and authentic.
  • You value collaboration and can communicate effectively with writers, producers, and editors on a flexible, project-based schedule.

How You'll Support the Mission
  • Edit and refine Press Freedom newsletter copy and social video scripts for clarity, accuracy, and engagement.
  • Help shape and evolve the distinct personality-driven voice for these products, weaving together news, opinion, and talent-first narratives.
  • Maintain consistent editorial standards across written and visual formats.
  • Coordinate with newsletter writers, video producers, and the Press Freedom team to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen storytelling, context, and relevance for diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate with the Press Freedom team to continuously enhance format, tone, and reader/viewer experience.

The Skills and Experience You Bring
  • Demonstrated editing experience, preferably with a news organization or publication.
  • Strong writing, copyediting, and storytelling skills across text and short-form video formats.
  • Familiarity with newsletter platforms, social video production workflows, and content optimization for audience engagement.
  • Interest or background in press freedom, media rights, or international journalism (nice to have, not required).
  • Reliability, flexibility, and the ability to meet deadlines within limited weekly hours.

This is a part-time, temporary hourly position averaging about 5 hours per week. It offers flexible scheduling and the opportunity to help shape dynamic, talent-driven products central to The Post's mission and values.
