Part-Time Diesel Mechanic
Position Title: Part-Time Diesel Mechanic
Position Summary
The Part-Time Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, inspections, and repairs on diesel-powered trucks, heavy equipment, and support vehicles. This position helps ensure fleet reliability, safety, and compliance with company and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate possesses strong troubleshooting skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance services, including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, and fluid inspections.
  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, air brake systems, and suspension components.
  • Conduct DOT inspections and ensure vehicles remain compliant with federal, state, and company safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic equipment.
  • Repair and replace defective components on refuse trucks, roll-off trucks, front-loaders, rear-loaders, and other fleet vehicles.
  • Complete work orders, maintenance records, and inspection reports accurately and timely.
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Follow all safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and PPE requirements.
  • Assist with parts inventory management and maintenance shop organization.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training in diesel technology preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of diesel mechanic experience preferred.
  • Experience working on heavy-duty trucks, refuse vehicles, or vocational equipment preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain.
  • ASE certifications are a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams, and service bulletins.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and air brakes.
  • Ability to safely operate maintenance tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Basic computer skills for maintenance tracking systems.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift up to 75 pounds with assistance.
