Organization

The Rescue Mission Alliance (RMA) is a Christian non-profit organization that has been serving the less fortunate in Southern California through emergency and long-term rehabilitation services since 1972. RMA partners with local churches to meet the spiritual needs of the people we serve. The Valley Food Bank (VFB), an outreach ministry of RMA is a Christian non-profit organization providing nutritious meals and food resources to the poor and needy free of charge through a network of food pantries and partnering agencies in the San Fernando Valley and surrounding communities since 2001.

Summary

The Food Bank Driver serves as the face of the Valley Food Bank to our donors, recipient food pantries and agencies while making pickups and deliveries throughout the San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley and Los Angeles areas. This is a part-time, non-exempt position located in Pacoima, California with occasional driving routes to Lancaster, Long Beach and Los Angeles areas. This position will report to the Warehouse Supervisor. Compensation is commensurate with skills and experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Driving

  • Represent the VFB by cultivating positive relationships with donors, recipients, staff and volunteers while making pickups and deliveries.
  • Make sound decisions regarding the acceptance and delivery of food and non-food item donations, ensuring the quality and safety of food.
  • Reviews scheduled pick-ups and deliveries to ensure vehicle is equipped with needed supplies and receipts.
  • Assists with loading and unloading of donations, utilizing proper lifting techniques and the appropriate tools and equipment provided, asking for assistance with items that are awkward or too heavy to be moved by one person.
  • Prior to departing, inspect vehicle and maintain vehicle supplies (i.e. gas, oil, water, tires, etc.) and vehicle maintenance logs/records to ensure vehicle is kept in proper working condition.
  • Maintains a clean vehicle appropriate for food donations.
  • Report any mechanical problems encountered with vehicles to supervisor.
  • Safely negotiate in a variety of environments, e.g. steep stairs, uneven surfaces.
  • Read and understand maps and follow written and verbal geographic directions.
  • Obey all traffic laws and follow established traffic and transportation procedures.
  • Comply with all Federal, State, and local laws regulating traffic and transportation procedures.
  • Ensure any accident or injury is promptly reported.
  • Maintain a safe driving record and appropriate driver's license classification while operating company vehicles.
  • Warehouse
  • Participates in general clean-up (offices, warehouse and outside dock areas).
  • Participates in preparation of pantry orders.
  • Participates in warehouse maintenance to include refrigeration units, aisles and shelving to ensure constant good state of police free and clear of hazards.
  • Participates in warehouse activities as directed by the Warehouse Supervisor or Manager.
  • Participates in activities to maintain the warehouse in a safe and organized manner.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with warehouse maintenance including refrigeration units, aisles and shelving to ensure constant good state of police free and clear of hazards, maintain the warehouse in a safe and organized manner.
  • Participates in warehouse activities such as preparation of pantry orders, as needed
  • A “Servant Leader” in actual everyday situations in alignment with RMA’s Lead Like Jesus commitment and Mission/Vision/Values.
  • Participate in volunteer activities; donor tours and other events when available to promote the work of the Valley Food Bank.
  • Attend all safety matrix and driver meetings.
  • Promote RMA Safety Program and in alignment with the Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and Smith Systems policies and procedures, model safe work practices

Supervisory Responsibilities

There are no employees reporting to this position.

Qualifications

  • Committed Christian with current and active fellowship/membership in a local church.
  • High School Diploma, or GED equivalent.
  • Valid California Driver’s License and insurable under RMA, minimum 5 years driving experience and proof of good driving record
  • Forklift and Airbrake Certified preferred.
  • Read, write and speak English.
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Position requires the ability to handle loading and unloading of 18’-24’ box truck. Operate manual and electric pallet jacks.
  • Able to lift, push, pull, and transport up to 60lbs.
  • Hands-on position, including moving boxes, lifting merchandise, etc.

Work Environment
Typical warehouse/delivery truck setting, diverse surroundings with unpredictable environments such as uneven surfaces and potential hazards such as stairs, etc. This position will function in a warehouse setting where medium duty equipment such as forklifts is in use. Will also be working in proximity with an at-risk population where errant behavior and disease risk may be present. Appropriate safety considerations will be required to avoid illness or injury.
