How much do part time battery engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 27, 2026, the average yearly pay for part time battery engineer in the United States is $115,418.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $95,000.00 and $130,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Battery Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Part Time Battery Engineer, you generally need a solid background in electrical or chemical engineering, with experience in battery technologies and related testing procedures. Familiarity with battery management systems (BMS), simulation software, and relevant safety regulations or certifications like IPC/WHMA-A-620 is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative development and maintenance of battery systems, even on a part-time schedule.

What are part time battery engineers?

Part time battery engineers are professionals who specialize in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of battery systems, but who work fewer hours than a standard full-time schedule. Their responsibilities may include working on battery performance optimization, safety assessments, and supporting projects related to energy storage. Part time roles are ideal for those seeking flexibility, such as students, retirees, or individuals balancing other commitments, while still contributing technical expertise to battery technology advancements.

What is the difference between Part Time Battery Engineer vs Full Time Battery Engineer?

AspectPart Time Battery EngineerFull Time Battery Engineer
Work HoursLess than 30 hours/week40+ hours/week
CertificationsTypically the same (e.g., battery technology, safety)Typically the same
Work EnvironmentFlexible, often project-basedFull-time, consistent
Employer UsageUsed by startups, research projectsCommon in manufacturing, automotive, tech companies

Part Time Battery Engineers work fewer hours, often on specific projects, while Full Time Battery Engineers have a consistent schedule. Both roles require similar certifications and skills, but the work environment and employer expectations differ based on hours committed.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time battery engineers, and how can they effectively manage their workload?

Part-time battery engineers often face the challenge of balancing project deadlines with limited working hours, which can make task prioritization crucial. They may also need to quickly get up to speed on ongoing projects and collaborate efficiently with full-time team members. To manage these challenges, clear communication with supervisors, effective use of project management tools, and maintaining organized documentation are essential. This approach helps ensure they stay aligned with project goals and can make meaningful contributions despite a reduced schedule.

Job Description:
Shield AI is redefining autonomous aviation with cutting-edge AI and GPS/RF-denied navigation technologies. Now, we’re building our next-generation aircraft, XBAT, like no other—one that will push the boundaries of innovation and performance.

We are looking for an entry-level Power Electronics Engineer who is excited to help bring X-BAT’s next-generation power systems to first flight. In this role, you will own a meaningful project directly tied to our power architecture critical path, while receiving direct mentorship from senior power and electrical engineers. We value first-principles thinking, hands-on engineering, and extreme ownership.
What you'll do:
  • Own a power electronics design that directly impacts X-BAT system performance and major flight test milestones, supported by a senior engineer who provides technical guidance and review.
  • Contribute to the full hardware lifecycle including concept development, modeling, worst-case analysis, schematic capture, simulation, prototyping, bring-up, verification, integration, and flight test support.
  • Design and analyze low-voltage and high-voltage power systems including DC-DC converters, inverters, motor controllers, battery systems, power distribution, and protection circuits.
  • Design systems across power ranges from <1 kW low-power loads to >10 kW high-power applications while balancing efficiency, thermal constraints, EMI/EMC performance, and reliability.
  • Partner with ECAD engineers on PCB layout for power density, thermal performance, EMI mitigation, and manufacturability.
  • Execute hands-on board bring-up, debug, root-cause analysis, and validation using oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, and other test equipment.
  • Support environmental, stress, and qualification testing (HALT, vibration, temperature cycling) for aerospace-grade reliability.
  • Collaborate closely with Mechanical, Embedded, Software, Production, and Aircraft teams to ensure robust system integration and clear interface ownership.
  • Drive disciplined engineering practices including documentation, risk reduction, and closing the loop between analysis and test results.
Required qualifications:
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Strong technical fundamentals in circuits, electronics, and power systems.
  • Hands-on experience (coursework, labs, clubs, or internships) with power electronics such as converters, motor drivers, batteries, or high-power systems.
  • Familiarity with electrical design tools (Altium, KiCad, etc.).
  • Experience using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, e-loads, and multimeters.
  • Participation in an engineering team/club or hands-on project experience.
  • Ability to obtain a S//SAR level security clearance desired.
