Job description

About the Role:

Wing is looking for a Senior Battery Engineer to join our Hardware Engineering team. This role is onsite based in Palo Alto, CA. As an Senior Battery Engineer, you will join our nimble design team, which is tasked with building unmanned, autonomous delivery vehicles and their support systems. You will be responsible for battery system excellence by leading the design, integration, and performance optimization of our energy storage solutions. You will contribute your experience in battery pack hardware design, cell selection and characterization, and verification, as well as your knowledge of the overall power architecture for both our aircraft and ground infrastructure. Additionally, you will define the battery system quality and validation strategy for new products regarding cell safety, thermal management, cycle life, BMS integration, and performance under dynamic flight profiles.

What You'll Do:

  • Maintain expert knowledge of the current and future state of the battery industry. Evaluate emerging cell technologies (e.g., solid-state, silicon anodes) to guide Wing's long-term energy storage roadmap.
  • Lead the evaluation and selection of battery technologies for future aircraft, balancing energy/power density, discharge rates, thermal characteristics, and cycle life against specific mission requirements.
  • Direct the design, development, and testing of battery systems with a focus on safety, reliability, and performance optimization (including charging speed and lifetime). Serve as Wing's primary Point of Contact (POC) with contract manufacturers.
  • Lead efforts to certify battery systems, ensuring strict compliance with relevant aviation regulations and safety standards as required for flight operations.
  • Act as the company-wide expert for all battery-related matters, partnering with the policy and regulatory teams to influence standards and support compliance efforts.
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, and flight systems teams to integrate high-fidelity battery data into vehicle health monitoring systems and flight contingency logic.
  • Analyze battery performance data from flight tests and commercial operations to drive continuous design improvements, failure mitigations, and data-driven predictive maintenance/replacement strategies.
  • Support complex risk analyses and evaluate the safety impacts of battery incidents, developing robust mitigation and containment strategies.

What You'll Need:

  • 8+ years of experience in battery engineering, with a focus on cell selection, battery pack design, and system integration.
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in the aerospace, robotics, or electric vehicle (EV) industries with high-power and safety-critical applications working with lithium-ion or other advanced battery chemistries.
  • Experience leading cross-functional hardware or system-level projects from concept through verification and validation.
  • Proficiency in data analysis using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools to evaluate large sets of battery performance data.
  • Experience with thermal management design, modeling, and testing for battery packs.
