Job description

Part-Time Academic Tutor \u007C Alamo, CA \u007C $38–$45/hr \u007C Mon–Thu Afternoons

A professional family in Alamo, CA (San Francisco Bay Area) is seeking an experienced academic tutor or elementary school teacher for part-time, 1:1 instruction with their 9-year-old son entering 4th grade. This is a placed position through Hello Nanny's Concierge service — meaning full recruiter support, mutual vetting, and ongoing placement assistance.

Schedule: Monday – Thursday \u007C 3:30 PM – 6:30 PM
Guaranteed hours: 12 hours per week
Pay rate: $38–$45 per hour (W-2, legally paid)
Start date: ASAP
Bilingual Spanish: Additional hours available for bilingual candidates

About This Academic Tutoring Role

This is a pure academic instruction role — no childcare, transportation, or household duties. You'll provide structured 1:1 tutoring sessions focused on 4th grade math, writing, and executive function skills. The family is looking for an educator who designs the learning experience, not someone who supervises homework completion.

This position is an ideal fit for:

  • A current or former elementary school teacher (K–5) seeking part-time afternoon hours
  • An education degree candidate with classroom or fieldwork experience
  • An educator or nanny currently working mornings with another family who wants consistent afternoon income

The Monday–Thursday afternoon schedule leaves mornings and Fridays fully open. Twelve guaranteed hours per week provides reliable, predictable income.

About the Student

Jake is a bright, bilingual 8-year-old entering 4th grade who thrives in 1:1 learning environments. He is a strong reader with high energy and a tendency toward distraction — group tutoring and passive homework help have not been effective. What works is a structured, warm educator who arrives prepared, holds the session with consistency, and adapts instruction to keep him engaged.

Primary academic focus areas:

  • Math — core need; 4th grade curriculum with foundational gap work
  • Writing — paragraph structure and written expression
  • Executive function — assignment management, organization, planning
  • General academic development — curriculum design and progress tracking

Academic Tutor Responsibilities

  • Arrive to each session with a prepared instructional plan
  • Deliver structured 1:1 academic tutoring in math, writing, and organizational skills
  • Design and maintain a 4th grade learning curriculum tailored to Jake's specific gaps
  • Teach executive function and study skills — not just task completion
  • Submit a written weekly progress summary covering session content, student performance, and upcoming goals
  • Communicate proactively with the family about what's working and what needs adjustment
  • Build consistent rapport that keeps Jake motivated and on track

Academic Tutor Qualifications

Required:

  • Teaching credential, active education degree, or equivalent professional teaching background
  • Strong working knowledge of 4th grade curriculum, with emphasis on elementary math instruction
  • Experience delivering 1:1 tutoring or individualized academic instruction
  • Ability to design a student-specific curriculum and track measurable progress
  • Experience or genuine comfort working with attention-challenged learners (ADD/ADHD)
  • Structured, professional approach — you come prepared and hold the session
  • Warm, relatable presence with elementary-age children

Strongly Preferred:

  • Spanish bilingual (additional tutoring hours available)
  • Former K–5 elementary school teacher
  • Background in executive function coaching or organizational skills instruction
  • Currently working in another child-facing role during the day

This role is not a match if:

  • Your approach is homework supervision rather than active instruction
  • You cannot speak to how you would address 4th grade math gaps
  • You prefer not to submit written weekly progress updates
