POSITION SUMMARY

The Graduate Assistant works in the Academic Support and Tutoring Services Center at Avila University. The position will be approximately 20 hours per week (6-credit hour reimbursement) or 10 hours per week (3-credit hour reimbursement).

Responsibilities:

• Work with students on an individual and/or small group basis to improve skill levels in specific content-based classes, including explanations of class work.

• Provide consultation on writing assignments including assignment development, research, sentence structure, paragraph development, Style Manual (e.g. APA, MLA) requirements, and other questions as needed.

• Provide an opportunity to answer questions that students may have about material presented in class.

• Conduct classroom visits to review tutoring options including in-person and online options.

• Conduct classroom training sessions on specific topics as requested by faculty members.

• Provide administrative support to Director of Academic Support Services as needed.

• Develop a personal learning relationship with students.

• Encourage and instruct students in good study habits and ethical use of AI.

• Refer students to other appropriate services for assistance and information, e.g. Student Advising, Counseling Services, Career Services etc.

• Use Navigate accurately for appointment scheduling, logging appointment information for scheduled and walk-in appointments, and other documentation as needed.

• Maintain accurate records.

• Complete all required training, becoming CRLA Level 1 and Level 2 certified.

• Review and evaluate how students are progressing on a regular basis and consult with Student Advising, other peer tutors and Director as needed.

• Assist and train undergraduate peer tutors as needed.

• Attend regularly scheduled meetings and training sessions.

• Work flexible hours, specifically late afternoon and early evening hours.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Must be admitted and enrolled in a graduate program at Avila University. International students are not eligible for graduate assistantships.

• The successful candidate for this position will possess a bachelor's degree and

must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, a commitment to student development, higher education, creativity, vision, passion, and compassion are imperative.

• Must be admitted and enrolled in a graduate program at Avila University. International students are not eligible for graduate assistantships.

• Familiarity with and proficiency in courses tutored, indicated by a grade of B or better.

• Demonstrated proficiency in various writing modalities in addition to APA and MLA

• Ability to determine the needs of students and present material in an understandable way.

• Desire to assist students in learning material and achieving success.

• Overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

• Evidence of ability to communicate effectively and knowledgeably with a wide variety of people.

• Tutoring or teaching experience preferred.

• Ability to contribute to a climate that supports a diverse student body, serves first-generation college students and multilingual learners, and contributes to equity and social justice through their work.

• The GA is expected to work the appropriate number of hours based on the allotted hours stated in the Graduate Assistant policy. The term of this position is based on the availability of the successful candidate but shall not exceed two full academic years.
