What jobs can a 17-year-old get part-time?

A 17-year-old can work in a variety of part-time jobs such as retail associate, fast food worker, barista, grocery store clerk, babysitter, or tutor. Many positions in restaurants, cafes, and local businesses are open to teenagers, especially those willing to work evenings, weekends, or during school holidays. Some states or countries may have specific labor laws or permit requirements for workers under 18, so it’s important to check local regulations before applying. These jobs are a great way to gain work experience, earn money, and build valuable skills for the future.

What skills and qualifications are needed to work part-time at age 17?

To thrive as a part-time worker at age 17, you generally need basic literacy and numeracy skills, a positive work attitude, and, in some cases, a work permit depending on local regulations. Familiarity with point-of-sale systems, basic computer applications, or industry-specific tools (like food handling in restaurants) may be required. Reliability, good communication, and willingness to learn are standout soft skills for young workers. These abilities help ensure you meet employer expectations, provide quality service, and gain valuable experience for future career growth.

What responsibilities can a 17-year-old expect in part-time jobs?

As a 17-year-old, you can find part-time positions in retail, food service, recreation, and some office settings, depending on local labor laws. Common roles include cashier, sales associate, restaurant host, barista, or lifeguard. Responsibilities often involve customer service, stocking shelves, handling cash registers, or light cleaning. These jobs help develop communication, teamwork, and time management skills, and often offer flexible schedules that accommodate school commitments.
