Reports To: Principal and Assigned Special Education Teacher
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal and Special Education Teacher, the Special Education Paraprofessional supports students with disabilities in maximizing their academic achievement, interpersonal development, and activities of daily living. The paraprofessional assists in implementing individualized instruction, reinforcing IEP goals, and maintaining a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
Essential Functions
  • Provide instructional support to students individually and in small groups under the direction of a certified Special Education Teacher.
  • Assist in implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and behavior intervention plans.
  • Reinforce instructional material through repetition, guided practice, and individualized assistance.
  • Support students in developing independence with self-care and daily living skills as appropriate.
  • Monitor and document student progress as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist with classroom preparation, organization of instructional materials, and learning activities.
  • Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, field trips, and other assigned duties.
  • Reinforce appropriate behavior using consistent, positive behavior management strategies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with district, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, administrators, and parents as directed.

Additional Duties
  • Perform related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Special Education Teacher, or central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Qualifications Profile
Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate's Degree or completion of at least 60 college credit hours preferred (or ability to meet state paraprofessional requirements).

Experience
  • Prior experience working with children, particularly students with disabilities, preferred.

Certification/License
  • Must possess an Associate's Degree or higher from an accredited institution
    OR Must pass the ETS ParaPro Assessment and meet Virginia Department of Education paraprofessional qualification requirements.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
