What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a Product Realization Team (PRT) Lead (job title: R&D Systems Engineer) for the W80-5 Enhanced Capability Shipping Configuration (ECSC). In this role, you will lead the realization of components critical to the fielding of the new W80-5 warhead. The ECSC consists of a weapon agnostic subsystem integrated into the W80-5 shipping configuration to provide over the road security. You'll have an opportunity to partner with engineering and research teams across the broader Nuclear Security Enterprise to design, produce, test, and integrate these products into the broader W80-5 warhead design. You will also work with other groups such as production agencies and vendors, an operations center, multiple interfacing PRTs, the customer (NNSA), and end users (PANTEX and the Navy).
On any given day, you may be called upon to:
  • Lead a PRT to field high-integrity products, meeting both technical and programmatic requirements
  • Utilize your expertise in engineering to serve as a Subject Matter Expert in areas of design, production, or qualification of components
  • Employ analytical thinking to work through ambiguous problems with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Leverage electrical, mechanical, process, test, and manufacturing engineering skills to identify robust and practical solutions
  • Develop innovative design concepts through requirements negotiation, trade studies, and virtual prototyping
  • Mature designs to a production-ready state through iterative design-build-test cycles and collaboration with the production agency
  • Define test activities that demonstrate robustness in a variety of environments at various levels of assembly
  • Advance new engineering processes to improve the efficiency of product development
  • Mentor and train less experienced engineers
  • Estimate, negotiate, and manage project budgets and schedules using earned value management
  • Present your work to peers, customers, and management in formal and informal settings

This position will offer you substantial opportunity for training, technical mentorship, and work across multiple sites within the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time at either Livermore, CA or Albuquerque, NM facility.
The position requires an ability to travel up to 15% to support the mission.
Applicants on this requisition may be interviewed by multiple organizations at Sandia National Laboratories.
Salary Range
$117,500 - $235,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Position requires an active DOE Q-level security clearance or equivalent to start.

Qualifications We Desire
The ideal R&D S&E Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
  • Experience in the design, development, qualification, and production of Nuclear Deterrence components.
  • Experience leading a multi-disciplinary product team.
  • Experience developing or managing project budgets and schedules.
  • Familiarity with design engineering including computer aided design/drafting and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes relevant to machined parts, electronics assemblies, cable assemblies, and robust packaging.
  • Familiarity with materials characterization and qualification techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to prepare clearly written reports and deliver well-articulated briefings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse teams across multiple geographic location.
  • Strong commitment to quality, safety, collaboration, and teamwork.

About Our Team
The W80-5 Systems Engineering departments are responsible for the systems engineering and integration of the warhead associated with the SLCM-N program. In close collaboration with NNSA NA-125, Navy, and NSE partners, the team works to design, integrate and deliver assets to strengthen our Nuclear Deterrence Mission.
The team is comprised of a group of dedicated and motivated engineers, primarily in Mechanical, Electrical, and Systems Engineering. The W80-5 program is focused on rapid execution and moved from warhead selection to Conceptual Design Review in just one year. The team is looking for new members with an eye for streamlining processes and efficient execution.
Posting Duration
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
EEO
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
