Description
The position of Packer at Richmond Baking is expected to effectively and efficiently perform the expectations and guidelines outlined.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for ensuring the production of safe and high quality products through verification of all processes and keen attention to all of Richmond Baking's Critical Control Points.
Understand, learn and follow all packing guidelines including Plex procedures.
Check production schedule and ensure and equipment needed for the shift's run is clean and ready to use at the beginning of the shift. Any equipment needed that is not ready to use must be reported to Supervision immediately.
Check machine completely: chains, belts, etc. for any foreign objects.
Make sure all conveyors are turned on and equipment needed for that day's production is in good running condition.
Remove any substandard product.
Fold cases according to product type being produced. Apply labels to cases as needed. Supply line with boxes at all times. Ensure code date and PO are correct on the label.
Properly weigh out cases according to case weigher operating procedures (if applicable) and provide correct case counts.
Properly fill out and return all necessary documentation and paperwork as instructed.
Must be able to distinguish the proper packaging according to the Quality Control Specifications.
Must be aware of proper set up of all the equipment in the production line in which he/she is assigned and assist with change over machine(s) in their area, ie; carton machine, tape case sealer, check weigher, and shrink wrap.
Place product in cases according to product type being produced.
Assist with changeovers in an efficient manner to help decrease downtime and increase productivity; be certain break schedules do not conflict with any scheduled changeovers. Maintain cleanliness in area before, during, and after changeover.
Stack cases on pallet per type of product being produced.
Record case counts in Plex and attach pallet stickers.
Understand and comply with all policies set forth by management.
Follow all GMPs as well as HACCP procedures; understand, observe and comply with the handling and proper usage of color coded containers.
Understand the scrap and rework procedures and assist in the removal of line waste or transfer of rework product to the appropriate floor as soon as possible.
Understand the cost of scrap, packing material cost and the employee's role in reducing these costs.
Fill in for any position that you are qualified to perform as instructed by Supervision and practice continuous training for all positions within your department.
Follow and promote all safety policies and procedures and notify Supervision of any unsafe act immediately.
Continually check package code date stamps, quality of printing on labels, proper weights and overall quality of all products that you come in contact with to ensure that everything meets the standards set forth by the Quality Control Department.
Notify Supervision/Maintenance of any needed repairs or required adjustments as soon as they are noted.
Perform any and all duties required to meet AIB, SQF, Company, and/or Governmental requirements/standards as set forth by Richmond Baking Company.
Keep work area clean; this includes making sure work area is swept up and placed in appropriate scrap container.
Ensure scrap containers are weighed and collected prior to leaving at the end of each shift and at each changeover.
Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
Capable of lifting 50 lbs repetitively.
Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with this position. Richmond Baking may utilize a Packer to act as a Trainer intermittently.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalency is preferred. Two to six years related experience and/or training, preferably in manufacturing or distribution companies; Food industry background a plus; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills essential for effectively fulfill the job requirements. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common articles and documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or concerns from co-workers and management. Ability to write legibly and appropriately complete necessary paperwork and documentation for said position. Ability to effectively present information to management, union personnel and third party representatives when appropriate.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to understand mathematical concepts to effectively analyze statistics regarding internal data such as throughputs, productivity, scrap and percent to goal calculations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
