Description:

Job Summary: The Lowboy Driver will be responsible for operating a tractor with a lowboy trailer, safely loading and unloading heavy machinery, and ensuring compliance with all traffic laws and safety regulations. This role requires confident heavy-haul operation, a thorough understanding of load securement practices, and the capability to transport a diverse range of light and heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Lowboy Driver typically does not have supervisory responsibilities. However, they may be required to provide guidance and support to new hires or less experienced drivers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate a tractor and lowboy trailer to transport heavy equipment, such as excavators, scrapers, loaders, and other oversized machinery, to and from various project sites across our oil and gas, civil, and construction service divisions.
  • Load and unload heavy equipment onto the lowboy trailer using ramps or hydraulic detachable gooseneck (RGN) systems, ensuring proper positioning and weight distribution.
  • Secure loads using chains, binders, straps, and other approved securement devices in accordance with DOT regulations and company policies.
  • Inspect the truck, trailer, and securement equipment before and after each shift to ensure safe operating condition and compliance with safety standards.
  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and others, including the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to traffic laws and oversize load requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with reporting manager, field supervisors, equipment operators, and other team members to coordinate delivery schedules and resolve any issues.
  • Obtain and comply with necessary permits for oversized or overweight loads as required.
  • Complete required paperwork, such as delivery tickets, pre- and post-inspection on the tractor and trailer every day, and order permits.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the truck and trailer, both inside and out.
  • Report any mechanical issues, damage, or safety concerns to maintenance personnel or supervisors promptly.
  • Adhere to company policies, procedures, and regulations governing transportation and heavy haul operations.
Requirements:

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for operating a tractor-trailer and hauling oversized loads per NDDOT.
  • Driving record must comply with company and insurance carrier requirements for commercial vehicle operation.
  • Strong understanding of load securement standards and federal and state transportation regulations related to heavy haul and oversized loads.
  • Excellent driving skills, including the ability to maneuver a large vehicle with an extended trailer in tight job site conditions and various weather environments.
  • Ability to safely operate or assist in operating heavy equipment during loading and unloading.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions and procedures accurately.
  • Physical strength and stamina to handle chains, binders, and other securement equipment.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with coworkers, supervisors, and customers.

Education Requirements:
Basic: High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred: Completion of a commercial truck driving program or equivalent heavy haul experience.
Preferred: Additional training or certification in defensive driving, load securement, oversized load transport, or other relevant areas.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job (but are not limited to). The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, or crouch for extended periods of time, unassisted. The incumbent must wear a respirator when required. Manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate industrial machinery is required. This job also requires full range of body motion to include handling and lifting. The incumbent must repeatedly lift and/or move up to 65 (SIXTY-FIVE) pounds unassisted. Visual acuity, hearing, speaking, reading, and writing must be adequate to perform all required tasks in a safe manner.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Work is usually done outdoors and sometimes at a client facility or job site and is frequently performed in inclement and/or extreme weather conditions. The incumbent is exposed to electricity, moving mechanical parts, vehicles, equipment, and hazardous materials. This position regularly requires long work hours and frequent weekend work.
