Overview

Weekend Overnight Registered nurses work from 11pm-8am on Saturdays and Sundays on-site at camp in Hunter, NY.  Overnight RN's work in a complete and mutually supportive team with the Unit Heads, Cabin Counselors, Program Staff, Kitchen Staff, Administration, and Campers to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all campers and staff.  This is achieved by providing high-quality nursing care, administering medications, first aid, documenting care, communicating with parents/guardians and Camp Leadership, training staff on health protocols, handling emergencies (including transport to hospitals) according to camp policies and state regulations, managing medical records, promoting overall wellness for campers with diverse needs, and focusing on high-level assessment, chronic condition management and safety in a structured environment.

Responsibilities

Medical Care & Assessment:

  • Responsible for remaining awake and alert throughout the night, responding promptly to any medical or safety emergencies, and notifying the Nurse Manager or Assistant Nurse Manager on-call, residential staff, and/or guardians if a camper is transported to the emergency room overnight.
  • Provide first aid and manage illnesses/injuries (e.g., burns, fractures, allergies).

Medication Management:

  • Administer any off-time medications that are given in the health center during shift hours of 11pm - 8am.
  • Verify and reconcile camper medications upon arrival and departure.
  • Review the clinic MAR on a nightly basis, review the unit MARs on a weekly scheduled basis, help with packing and distribution of medications that will be departing with campers on transfer days and surplus medication counts.
  • Ensure medications and treatments are administered safely and in compliance with agency policy and procedure and that documentation of the same is completed.
  • In the event that a medication or prescription is missing or runs out, the overnight nurse will be responsible for notifying the Nurse Manager or Assistant Nurse Manager on-call, the oncoming clinic nurse and the unit nurse
  • Follow prescriber's orders for medication and/or treatments, as well as, individualized guidelines.

Health & Safety Management:

  • Maintain the health center, ensuring cleanliness, sanitation, and proper supply levels.
  • Review and implement health protocols, including emergency action plans.
  • Ensure compliance with State/American Camp Association (ACA) health regulations.

Documentation & Communication:

  • Maintain accurate, detailed medical records, logs, and incident reports.
  • Hand off in-patient report to the next day's clinic nurse and the Nurse Manager or Assistant Nurse Manager of the Health Center
  • Hand off overnight report of any emergency responses and any other pertinent health concerns encountered overnight to the Nurse Manger or Assistant Nurse Manager.
  • Communicate health issues, needs, and incidents to parents, camp leadership, and medical providers.

Emergency Response:

  • Respond to emergencies, assess needs, and arrange transport to local hospitals/clinics if needed.
  • Serve as a liaison with emergency services and external healthcare facilities.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Camp Nurse Manager and Camp Assistant Nurse Manager (immediate supervisors).
Qualifications
  • New York State Professional Nursing Certification.
  • Current NYS Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid certification. Must be renewed annually in accordance with DOH regulations.
  • Experience in pediatrics, special needs, or camp nursing preferred
  • Strong assessment, decision making, and communication skills

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Residential camp setting; requires flexibility, potential for 24/7 on-call availability.
  • Ability to move throughout camp property, including uneven terrain and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, or move up to 25 pounds independently and assist with lifting/transferring campers as needed.
  • Capacity to respond quickly in emergency situations, which may require physical activity (e.g., CPR, first aid).
  • Tolerance for extended standing, walking, or bending during daily operations.
