Job description

Job Description

The Overnight Engineer II position will be responsible for repairs, maintenance, upkeep and operations of materials, supplies and components of the Inn. The Engineer II will be working on interior and exterior projects that include plumbing, painting, carpentry, minor electrical and HVAC work; and will also assist in other areas of Engineering as assigned, such as preventative maintenance of Inn public areas and guest rooms. The Engineer II will work with an Engineering team focused on the exceptional service of the Guests of the Inn on Biltmore Estate, while also providing general assistance and support for the leadership, department, and company.


This position is responsible for performing the above duties during 3rd shift. The ability to work overnight hours as designated by leadership is an essential function of this position. Schedule can vary, but is generally Friday-Monday, 10:30pm - 6:00am.

Essential Job Duties

1. Maintain an accurate knowledge of correct maintenance procedures and use of equipment. Use equipment only as intended.
2. Maintain a thorough knowledge at all times of:
A. All Inn features, services and hours of operation.
B. All room types, number, layout, decor and location.
C. Daily house count and expected arrivals/departures.
D. Room availability status for any given day.
4. Receive daily work assignments from Chief Engineer/Supervisor and review priorities and special projects.
5. Maintain par stock levels of fixtures, tools and other standard supplies. Communicate requisition needs to the Engineering Supervisor.
6. Understand, operate and maintain the property's electrical systems and equipment, plumbing equipment, and a thorough knowledge of carpentry functions.

Additional Responsibilities

1. Maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of the work area.
2. Handle chemicals for designated uses/surfaces.
3. Assist with any special projects assigned and room preventive maintenance.
4. Ensure that the swimming pool is properly maintained. Test water and equipment.
5. Maintain proper use, cleaning and storage of all tools, equipment and supplies.
6. Install, maintain, replace or repair equipment, hardware, fixtures, etc.
7. Have an overall knowledge of Biltmore Estate activities, special events and attractions on the Estate.
8. Install, maintain, replace or repair: furniture, ceiling tiles, grid work, fasteners, doors, walls, sliding glass doors, framework, cabinetry, hinges, locks, and closers.
9. Maintain positive guest relations at all times and anticipate guests' needs, respond promptly and acknowledge all guests, however busy and whatever time of day.
10. Provide assistance and support for department, leadership, and the company.

Qualifications

1. High school diploma required. Additional training/education and certification in
carpentry, plumbing, electrical, or other trade preferred.
2. Minimum two (2) years of experience in commercial plant operations and mechanics,
preferably in an upscale hotel/resort/facility setting.
3. Demonstrated commitment to delivering world class internal/external guest service.
4. Experience with carpentry, plumbing and building mechanical systems (electrical, etc.
); can read construction drawings, blueprints and schematics. Math skills a must.
5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; must be able to provide clear and
concise directions and instructions, and interact professionally with staff and guests.
6. Strong planning/organizational skills; can prioritize work, multi-task, and adapt.
7. Handles a variety of internal and external guest issues in a professional manner.
8. Proactive and exercises good judgment; troubleshoots and problem solves.
9. Keen attention to detail with focus on quality and service.

Physical Requirements

1. Exert physical effort in transporting 50 - 75 pounds frequently.
2. Endure various physical movements throughout the work areas.
3. Reach, push, pull, bend and lift.
4. Ability to remain in stationary or ambulatory positions throughout work shift.
5. This job involves working in the Engineering workshop and all areas of the hotel:
A. Under variable temperature conditions (extreme heat or cold).
B. Under variable noise levels.
C. Outdoors and indoors.
D. Around fumes and odor hazards.
E. Around dust and mite hazards.
