Job description

Position Title: Laborer (Landfill)
Department: Public Works & Transportation
Division: Landfill
Salary: $33,118.00yr/$15.922115hr
Closing Date: Until Filled

Job Summary/Scope
Picks up trash at landfill and from highways leading to landfill, cuts waste tires, recovers freon, cleans maintenance building and other related duties. No budgetary responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Picks up trash at landfill and highways leading to landfill.
  • Mows grass and trims with weed eater.
  • Assists in moving fences which serve as barriers to catch blowing paper.
  • Cleans shop, break room and scales.
  • Assists operators in digging out tracks on equipment.
  • Directs traffic in the dump area when necessary.
  • Processes waste tires
  • Performs freon recovery

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists mechanic with equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required (Essential) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of general safety rules and equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical equipment and operations.
  • Ability to follow instructions and carry out assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
  • A valid Operator License with possibility to obtain a Class A License.

Material and Equipment Directly Used
Operates a variety of hand tools and other equipment; such as, shovels, chain saw and brush and weed control equipment. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements
Exposure to a variety of weather conditions; such as, extreme heat, cold, wind and rain. Frequent walking over uneven terrain; as well as, frequent periods of standing, stooping, walking, and bending. Occasional lifting of objects weighing 50 pounds or assisting in lifting objects in excess of 50 pounds. Work environment is frequently dusty due to landfill operations. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required. No experience necessary.
All applicants must pass a drug screening and criminal background check prior to employment.
