Job Summary

Forensic Investigations Intern Unpaid 

JOB SUMMARY

The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Forensic Investigations Intern for the Law Enforcement Bureau. This internship is ideal for students with a strong interest in learning multiple aspects of Forensic Investigations, including lab procedures and workflow.

Applicants must currently be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in an accredited college or university in the field of Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, or a Science Degree, such as biology or chemistry.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent(s) in this position and are not all-inclusive. The omission of specific duties and responsibilities will not preclude it from the position.

Applicants must be prepared to demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Respond to numerous types of crime scenes with internship supervisor to observe, learn, and note processes.
  • Observe and maintain detailed documentation.
  • Assist with supervised lab procedures.
  • Perform data analysis and report preparation.
  • Turn in all education-related paperwork and evaluations on time to fulfill internship requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

Knowledge of:  

  • Basic Crime Scene Etiquette
  • Basic Law Enforcement Knowledge
  • Basic Evidence Handling and Chain of Custody Knowledge
  • Basic Knowledge of Types of Exposure in Crime Scenes
  • Safety and Quality Standards

 

Skills and Abilities to:  

  • Communicate effectively and concisely both verbally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with employees and staff of law enforcement
  • Gather, evaluate, interpret and share data
  • Approach complex problems logically
  • Pay close attention to detail for meticulous evidence handling and analysis
  • Complete educational requirements successfully to earn internship credit

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Working in a variety of weather conditions, including inclement weather, walking in uneven terrain, occasionally responding outside normal business hours, including nights and weekends, if a scene comes up and is available.

Potentially working in a laboratory setting, which includes the possibility of exposure to biological fluids and hazardous chemicals.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION

The duration of the internship with the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office will be approximately 16 weeks, running concurrently with the semester schedule as closely as possible. The type and frequency of scenes that will be available to attend is not guaranteed as this cannot be predetermined. Schedules will be tailored to work with the intern's school schedule and Crime Lab personnel as best as possible. On average, it will be 1-2 days a week, with approximately 3-5 hours each day. Exact schedule TBD.
