What Are Outdoor Jobs?

Outdoor jobs are those that require you to work outdoors, typically in a land management or recreation role, whether it is natural resource surveying, environmental monitoring, landscape design, or leading hiking, camping or other outdoor expeditions and outfitting people for enjoying the outdoors. Depending on the type of job and which industry you work in, your duties and responsibilities vary. Those in land management, for example, observe and maintain land to specific regulations, while people working in a ski shop provide customer service and advice to clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Outdoor Guide, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Outdoor Guide, you need strong knowledge of outdoor survival, navigation, and safety practices, often supported by certifications such as Wilderness First Aid or Leave No Trace. Familiarity with GPS devices, mapping software, and communication tools like two-way radios is typically required. Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills set outstanding guides apart, enabling them to manage groups and respond to emergencies. These competencies ensure client safety, enjoyable experiences, and effective risk management in unpredictable outdoor environments.

What are some common challenges faced by outdoor educators, and how can they be successfully managed?

Outdoor educators often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather, varying group dynamics, and ensuring participant safety in remote environments. To manage these, it’s important to plan thoroughly, maintain clear communication with both participants and colleagues, and stay up to date on risk management protocols. Building flexibility into lesson plans and maintaining strong situational awareness can also help educators adapt quickly to changing conditions, ensuring positive learning experiences for all involved.

Base Pay

This role has a minimum base pay from $15.80 per hour with higher starting pay available based on experience.Your Work Matters

This is your chance to help launch something brand new. Our Outdoor Concept brings everything for outdoor living - pavers, decking, pool tile, outdoor kitchens, lighting, and more - together in one inspiring space. As an Outdoor Designer, you’ll design with both creativity and technical know-how, take the lead in growing sales, build relationships with homeowners and pros, and shepherd projects from first idea to final product. You’ll sell with expertise, design with purpose, and help define how customers experience the outdoors with Floor & Decor.

Your Day Consists Of

  • Driving sales by connecting with homeowners, contractors, and landscapers to uncover outdoor-living needs and project opportunities.

  • Leading customer consultations - interpreting site sketches, recommending materials, and creating tailored project solutions.

  • Developing design plans through hand sketches or CAD tools including AutoCAD and SketchUp. This includes conceptual layouts, detailed construction documents, and specifications.

  • Managing each project from first conversation through order fulfillment, ensuring customers feel confident every step of the way.

  • Partnering with store and merchandising teams to bring the Outdoor Concept experience to life through high-impact displays and demo areas.

  • Building and maintaining a strong local network of pros, installers, and outdoor specialists to expand your referral pipeline.

  • Staying up to date on landscaping trends and everything from slope and drainage to lighting, decking, and pool tile so you can sell with credibility and confidence.

  • Applying a designer’s eye for aesthetics and layout while balancing technical requirements like measurements, installation needs, and site considerations.

  • Sharing insights and customer feedback to help shape how this new concept grows and evolves.

  • Other duties as assigned – we are big on teamwork and jumping in to support others, in any area of the store, when needed!

Successful Candidates Are or Have

  • 3–5 years of experience in outdoor-living, landscaping, or building-materials sales with a proven record of driving results.

  • A degree in hardscape design, landscape design, or a related field is a strong plus.

  • Technical proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, strongly preferred.

  • A strong sales instinct - energized by growth, confident in closing, and skilled at building lasting relationships with customers and pros.

  • Working knowledge of terrain, slope, drainage, and irrigation; familiarity with decking, outdoor kitchens, and lighting are a strong plus.

  • The ability to manage complex projects end-to-end, balancing multiple priorities with precision, communication, and follow-through.

  • A self-starter mindset and entrepreneurial drive to help shape, sell, and scale a brand-new concept from the ground up.

You’ll Be Supported With

Working Conditions (travel, hours, environment)

  • While performing the duties of this job, you will frequently be exposed to a retail warehouse environment and moving vehicles.  The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate to noisy.
