As a Marine Technician I, you'll play a critical role in keeping our Marine & Environmental Lands Unit mission-ready by maintaining the vessels and equipment our deputies rely on every day to protect the citizens and visitors of Pinellas County. You'll inspect, repair, maintain, and service law enforcement vessels, trailers, outboard motors, generators, and specialized equipment that support marine patrol operations throughout Pinellas County.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8-hour shifts, 0800-1700; however, the schedule is subject to change. Consideration given for relevant experience.
The background investigation process may take up to 6 weeks depending upon the complexity of the applicant's background and position for which they've applied.
Job Description:
Under the general direction of the Marine and Environmental Lands Unit Sergeant, members are expected to learn, develop, and perform the processes and procedures associated with general vessel maintenance, outboard motor repair, basic upfitting of vessel's electronic components, all-terrain vehicles, and basic generator maintenance. The knowledge required to complete many of the duties listed above will be obtained by assisting the Marine Technician II, serving as his/her mechanical apprentice. Technicians are required to exercise good judgement and individual initiative in handling routine work and special assignments. This position requires interaction with multiple levels of personnel throughout the agency and will be required to always represent the division and agency in a professional manner. Work is reviewed through observation and results obtained.
SUPERVISES OTHERS: No

• Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and performs preventative maintenance on various types of outboard motors, vessels, generators, trailers, all-terrain vehicles, and other related equipment
• Transports vessels, all-terrain vehicles, and other equipment to various locations, such as other campuses, break-down sites, dealerships, repair shops, and marinas
• Requests and picks up repair parts, materials and equipment as required for the efficient performance of assigned repair work
• Uses manuals and schematics in ordering parts and servicing vessels, all-terrain vehicles, outboard motors, and other equipment
• Dismantles and removes equipment and decals from agency vessels and equipment to prepare for maintenance or auction
• Maintain, wash, wax, and detail agency owned vessels, trailers, and all-terrain vehicles
• Maintains a clean, safe, and organized work area, sweeping and mopping floors and performing any other cleaning duties required
• Regular and reliable attendance is required as an essential function of the position
• Participates in Sheriff's Office recruitment and community relations activities as directed
• This position is considered essential and in the event of an emergency or natural disaster, will be required to report to work

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent diploma from an institution accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or licensed as a degree granting institution by the Commission for Independent Education
• One (1) year work experience in the maintenance and repair of vessel / marine related equipment
• Must successfully pass agency provided training / school for the maintenance and repair of the current preferred brand of outboard motors.
• Must have ample personal tool inventory to efficiently perform required installation and maintenance services
• Must possess a valid Florida driver's license

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledgeable of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
• Ability to learn and become knowledgeable in the repair of outboard motors
• Ability to understand operating principles of electrical and mechanical systems and components found on outboard engine powered vessels and other equipment
• Ability to diagnose, locate, define, adjust, and/or repair major defects in vessels and equipment and to make necessary repairs within time limits recognized as industry standards
• Ability to understand the diagnostic equipment utilized for computer-controlled vessel systems
• Ability to use the computerized fleet maintenance system
• Ability to trailer large vessels and other equipment
• Ability to safely operate a forklift
• Ability to comprehend, acknowledge, and carry out oral and written instructions
• Ability to maintain accurate and complete work order records and to concisely record time, parts, and other pertinent information
• Ability to accurately read part numbers, labels, and write neatly and legibly
• Ability to perform all functions of the job classification without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
