Part-Time Marine Engine Mechanic (Outboard)

Park City Sailing Association

Heber, UT

$30 - $40/hr

Part-time

Posted 11 days ago

Job description

About Park City Sailing Association
Park City Sailing Association (PCSA) is a vibrant, community-focused 501(c)(3) sailing program dedicated to cultivating a diverse and welcoming community of sailors in Utah. We provide enriching experiences for sailors of all ages and backgrounds through outreach, boat access, racing, social events, and educational opportunities using our well-maintained fleet and quality facilities at the stunning Jordanelle Reservoir, just minutes from historic Park City. PCSA boasts an active sailing community with over 600 participants and 100 vessels, and we're proud recipients of the 2024 US Sailing Outstanding Community Sailing Program award.
Position Overview
PCSA is seeking a skilled, local marine engine mechanic to help maintain our fleet of 10–15 outboard-powered motorboats and RIBs (safety/coach boats and committee boats) used to support our sailing school, racing, and adaptive programs. This is a flexible, part-time role — roughly 1–2 days per week — ideal for an experienced technician who lives in the Park City / Heber / Wasatch Back / greater Salt Lake area and wants steady, seasonal side work close to home. You'll keep our boats safe, reliable, and on the water throughout the May–October season.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on outboard engines (oil/lube changes, impellers, plugs, filters, fuel systems, lower units).
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, fuel, and cooling-system issues across the outboard motorboat/RIB fleet.
  • Winterize and commission engines at season start and end.
  • Inspect and maintain fuel systems, batteries, steering, controls, and props; troubleshoot as needed.
  • Keep simple maintenance logs and flag parts/major repairs that need to be ordered or outsourced.
  • Help maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area consistent with OSHA/EPA practices.
Required qualifications
  • 2+ years of hands-on outboard marine engine experience; Mercury or Honda familiarity a plus.
  • ABYC and/or manufacturer certifications preferred but not required for the right experienced candidate.
  • Comfortable working outdoors on the water and at a boat dock/ramp environment.
  • Reliable, self-directed, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Valid Utah driver's license; ability to lift up to 50–70 lbs.
  • Clean background check (required as a condition of employment).
  • Local to the Park City / Wasatch Back / greater Salt Lake area strongly preferred for quick, on-site responsiveness.
Compensation & Schedule
  • $30–$40/hour, depending on experience and certifications.
  • Part-time, 5-15 hours per week, flexible scheduling around the sailing season (May–October).
  • A great fit for a semi-retired tech, a shop mechanic wanting extra hours, or a marine enthusiast who loves being on the water.
Benefits
  • Access to PCSA's fleet (including J22s, RS Quests, and other boats) for personal sailing
  • Opportunity to work in an award-winning, inclusive program with scholarships available
