To thrive as an Orthopedic RN, you need a solid background in musculoskeletal assessment, post-operative care, pain management, and a valid RN license, often with additional orthopedic nursing certification. Familiarity with orthopedic-specific equipment, wound care protocols, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is crucial. Orthopedic RNs often encounter challenges such as managing complex pain control for post-operative patients, monitoring for complications like blood clots or infections, and assisting with frequent mobility and rehabilitation needs. To prepare, nurses should stay current on orthopedic best practices, develop strong communication skills for patient education, and collaborate closely with surgeons, physical therapists, and other care team members.
