The Role and Why It's Important
Our Pay Station Clerks keep the dining and checkout experience running smoothly for customers enjoying everything our store has to offer. In this role, you'll operate the register, assist customers with their orders, and help maintain a clean and well-stocked environment so every visit is a great one.

What You'll Do
No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:
  • Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and making every interaction a positive one
  • Operate the cash register accurately, scanning product and processing all payment types including cash, checks, credit card transactions, in-store charges, coupons, and discounts
  • Count back change and issue receipts, and place merchandise in bags or boxes for customers
  • Ensure adequate supplies of silverware, condiments, and beverage cups are on hand for customer use
  • Refill and maintain the coffee service area including cups, utensils, and condiments
  • Assist with bussing tables in the Hickory House or Market Grille sit-down areas and run orders out to the dining area from food stations as needed
  • Practice proper sanitation procedures and keep your work area clean and organized throughout your shift
  • Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call
  • Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
  • Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assigned
  • Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines
  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills
To be successful, you'll need to be able to:
  • Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables
  • Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages and make change accurately
  • Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing
  • Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a great customer experience

Education and Experience
  • No education or experience requirements; we will provide all the training you need to succeed

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas
  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation
  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment
  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards
  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment
This is a fast-paced role in a retail store and dining environment where you will be on your feet throughout your shift. You will have frequent exposure to temperature extremes and dampness, with possible equipment movement hazards and exposure to cleaning chemicals or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
