Job description

Department: Community & Recreation Services
Pay Grade: A1
FLSA Status: Nonexempt - 29.5 hours per week
JOB SUMMARY
The Recreation Summer Intern assists the Community Services Department in delivering quality recreation programs, events, and services to the community. This position provides hands-on experience supporting recreation activities, special events, and daily operations at PERA and recreation facilities. The intern will help create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for participants while gaining valuable skills in teamwork, customer service, and program coordination.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assist with youth, adult, and senior recreational programming
  • Support promotion of programs and community outreach efforts
  • Perform daily facility and operational duties alongside Recreation staff
  • Set up and take down equipment, supplies, and activity areas for programs and events
  • Provide direct support during peak programming,
  • Responds to public inquiries about youth and adult recreation programs made by telephone or text.
  • Assists in cleaning public facilities at the Sports Complex and PERA.
  • Assists in the preparation and maintenance of playing fields.
  • Provide excellent customer service by answering questions and assisting the public
  • Monitor program areas to ensure safety guidelines and rules are followed
  • Assist with basic administrative tasks such as attendance tracking and program support
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of facilities, equipment, and work areas
  • Communicate effectively with staff, participants, and supervisors
  • Report any safety concerns, incidents, or maintenance needs to staff promptly
  • Follow all City policies, procedures, and safety protocols
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Currently enrolled in high school, college, or vocational program
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Previous work experience preferred but not required
  • Volunteer experience, school activities, or clubs encouraged
  • Experience working with the public, children, or community programs is a plus
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, email, etc.)
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to follow directions and complete tasks independently
  • Reliable and punctual

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Assisting with organizing and leading activities, games, and events
  • Providing positive customer service in a community setting
  • Basic computer use (email, scheduling, simple data entry)
  • Problem-solving and adapting to changing situations
  • Work effectively with children, teens, and diverse community members
  • Follow directions and work both independently and as part of a team
  • Maintain a positive attitude and professional behavior
  • Be reliable, punctual, and responsible
  • Assist with setup, cleanup, and general program support
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Learn new tasks quickly and take initiative when needed

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The following physical abilities are required: climbing, fingering, handling, hearing, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, and visual acuity.
