What is the role?

Michaels Energy is seeking an energy engineer to support utility energy efficiency programs in Colorado. This position will perform energy assessments and detailed studies on commercial and industrial buildings, recommend changes to building automation systems, perform energy calculations, and write reports.


Technical tasks include identifying energy efficiency measures, performing energy engineering calculations and simulations of equipment, estimating project costs, and writing technical reports. Client and customer communication is critical in this role. Types of communication include onsite and virtual meetings, presentations, and non-technical and technical writing. We are looking for an engineer who is passionate about energy efficiency and removing barriers for the customer that will result in the implementation of projects.


How do you contribute?
After 3 months, you will have.

  • Learned company processes and procedures
  • Been involved in multiple SEM customer engagements and completed one Demand Response assessment

After 6 months, you will have.

  • Proficiency in two energy efficiency programs within the region
  • Led customer meetings and project report-outs
  • Acted as primary engineer on at least one SEM engagement and facilitate at least one Demand Response customer

What are we looking for?

  • Bachelors degree, preferably in mechanical, chemical, or building systems engineering
  • Three to seven years' experience combining any of the following:
    • Energy efficiency industry e.g., utilities or performance contracting
    • HVAC operations, controls, and/or building energy investigations
    • Utility program experience in retro-commissioning, ASHRAE level 2 energy audits, or custom rebate calculations
    • Electrification technologies (heat pumps, heat recovery chillers, etc.)
    • Managing building retrofit projects
    • Implementing controls upgrades
    • Building codes/safety standards
  • PE (Professional Engineer) is preferred but not required
  • Excels at communicating complicated ideas to a variety of audiences
  • Skilled at interfacing with contractors and building owners
  • Deep interest in energy, systems, and process efficiency, and improving productivity
  • Lifetime self-learner
  • Ability to travel up to 25% regionally for on-site customer work, with minimal overnight stay.
