What are open casting calls?

Open casting calls are auditions that are open to anyone who wants to try out for a role, regardless of their experience or whether they have an agent. These calls give aspiring actors and performers a chance to be seen directly by casting directors and producers. Open casting calls are commonly used in film, television, theater, and modeling to discover new talent. They typically involve showing up at a set location during a specified time, sometimes with a prepared monologue or scene. It's a great opportunity for newcomers to break into the industry and gain experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive when responding to open casting calls, and why are they important?

To thrive in open casting calls, you need strong acting skills, a foundational understanding of script interpretation, and typically some formal training or experience in theater or film. Familiarity with self-taping techniques, casting platforms (like Casting Networks or Backstage), and headshot/resume preparation is essential. Confidence, adaptability, and the ability to take direction gracefully are standout soft skills in this environment. These abilities help performers make a lasting impression, handle varied audition scenarios, and increase their chances of being cast.

What should I expect during an open casting call, and how can I best prepare for the process?

During an open casting call, you'll typically audition in front of casting directors and sometimes producers, often alongside a large number of other candidates. Expect to perform a short monologue, scene, or cold read, and be ready for possible callbacks or on-the-spot direction. Preparation is key: research the project, rehearse your material, dress appropriately for the role, and bring your headshot and resume. Open calls can be fast-paced and competitive, so staying professional, adaptable, and positive throughout the process will help you stand out.

Casting Directors are industry professionals who select talent through private auditions, leveraging their expertise and networks. While Open Casting Calls provide opportunities for new talent, Casting Directors handle the selection process behind the scenes for specific roles.

  • Custom corporate and private-event entertainment

We are seeking a reliable, organized, and resourceful Casting Assistant to work from our Austin office.

Position Overview

The Casting Assistant will support the daily casting, scheduling, administrative, and event-coordination needs of our company.

This position requires someone who can manage multiple events simultaneously, communicate professionally with actors and clients, and remain calm when an event requires an urgent casting replacement or last-minute adjustment.

This is not simply a general office position. Applicants should have experience or strong working knowledge in casting, live entertainment, theater, event planning, talent coordination, production, or a closely related field.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Organize auditions and performer interviews
  • Prepare and distribute casting calls
  • Review actor and performer submissions
  • Contact actors regarding availability and qualifications
  • Schedule performers for events
  • Prepare call times, event instructions, addresses, and directions
  • Confirm that performers received and understood their instructions
  • Contact clients to verify event details
  • Coordinate events with corporate and private event planners
  • Maintain accurate performer and event records
  • Update website information and company databases
  • Post casting and promotional content on social media
  • Track open roles and casting deadlines
  • Follow up with performers who have not confirmed
  • Assist with last-minute performer replacements
  • Communicate changes to clients, performers, sales representatives, and production staff
  • Maintain organized documentation for multiple events in different cities

Required Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • Experience in casting, theater, live entertainment, event planning, talent coordination, production, or a related field
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Strong professional phone etiquette
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to manage several events and deadlines simultaneously
  • Good judgment under pressure
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Professionalism when communicating with actors, clients, and event planners
  • The ability to follow instructions and complete assignments without constant supervision
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Google Workspace, email, calendars, and online business systems
  • Familiarity with WordPress or similar website platforms
  • Knowledge of social-media posting and promotion
  • General knowledge of television, movie, historical, theatrical, and popular entertainment characters
  • An understanding of the relationship between sales, casting, creative development, and event production

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to applicants with experience in:

  • Casting actors or entertainers
  • Theater or film production
  • Talent agencies
  • Corporate-event planning
  • Entertainment booking
  • Preparing actor call sheets
  • Working with performers in multiple cities
  • Coordinating costumes, rehearsals, travel, or event logistics
  • Handling last-minute event or talent emergencies

Schedule and Availability

This is a full-time, in-office position in Austin, Texas. It is NOT remote or hybrid.

Applicants must be able to report reliably to the Austin office for all scheduled shifts.

Because live events may occasionally involve last-minute changes, applicants should be available for reasonable evening or weekend communication when an urgent casting issue affects an upcoming event.

Who Will Succeed in This Position

The strongest candidate will be:

  • Dependable and punctual
  • Loyal and committed
  • Calm during stressful situations
  • Comfortable making professional telephone calls
  • Persistent with performer confirmations and follow-up
  • Honest about mistakes or incomplete assignments
  • Capable of prioritizing urgent issues
  • Highly organized
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Interested in building a long-term relationship with the company

Application Requirements

To be considered, applicants must submit:

  1. A current resume
  2. A cover letter
  3. The city in which they currently reside
  4. A description of their relevant casting, entertainment, theater, production, or event-planning experience
  5. An explanation of why they would be a strong fit for Characters for Hire

Begin your cover letter with the words:

Live Entertainment Operations

Applications submitted without a cover letter or without the requested phrase may not be reviewed.

Please do not call the company regarding this position.
