Opc Modeling Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OPC Modeling Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OPC Modeling Engineer, you need a strong background in semiconductor physics, computational modeling, and a relevant engineering or science degree. Expertise in OPC software tools like Mentor Calibre or Synopsys, along with experience in scripting languages such as Python or Perl, is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective cross-functional communication are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure precise photolithography models, efficient design-to-manufacturing processes, and seamless collaboration with design and fabrication teams.

What is the difference between Opc Modeling Engineer vs PCB Design Engineer?

AspectOpc Modeling EngineerPCB Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related, knowledge of OPC standardsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or PCB Design certifications
Work EnvironmentSemiconductor fabrication, EDA tool developmentElectronics manufacturing, product development
Industry UsageSemiconductor industry, IC manufacturingConsumer electronics, industrial equipment
Common Search/ComparisonYesNo

Opc Modeling Engineers focus on creating models for optical proximity correction in semiconductor manufacturing, working closely with EDA tools and chip fabrication. PCB Design Engineers develop printed circuit boards for electronic devices, emphasizing layout and electrical integrity. While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge, they serve different stages of electronic product development and are used in distinct industry segments.

What are some common challenges faced by OPC Modeling Engineers when working with new process nodes?

OPC Modeling Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to the increasing complexity of advanced process nodes, where feature sizes become smaller and patterning requirements grow more demanding. Accurate model calibration becomes more time-consuming, requiring close collaboration with lithography, process, and design teams. Additionally, integrating new materials and technologies can introduce unforeseen variables, making continuous learning and flexible problem-solving essential for success in this role.

What are OPC Modeling Engineers?

OPC Modeling Engineers are specialists who develop, calibrate, and maintain optical proximity correction (OPC) models used in semiconductor manufacturing. These engineers work to improve the fidelity of photolithography processes by simulating and correcting distortions that occur when transferring circuit patterns onto silicon wafers. Their expertise helps ensure that microchips are fabricated with high precision and yield, enabling the continued advancement of smaller and more complex semiconductor devices. OPC Modeling Engineers typically collaborate with process engineers, software developers, and design teams to optimize and implement OPC strategies.

The successful candidate will collaborate with a variety of teams around the business and will be responsible for developing new OPC models, CDSEM metrology specs, collaborating with tapeout engineers to create and or update mask/reticle tapeout flows and creating/updating training documents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collecting, ingesting, sanitizing and preparing large data sets for use in OPC model calibrations and correction recipe development. Creating and maintaining scripts for these steps is essential.
  • Calibrating OPC models, and developing correction recipe flows, and contour-based checks for new and existing 248nm and dry 193nm lithography processes.
  • Support customer requests through test structure creation and reticle builds.
  • Work closely with design, layout, and process engineers to understand and incorporate technology requirements into the OPC models and PDKs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing OPC flows and supporting processes as follows: 10 years + experience with BS, 7-10 years of experience with MS, 5+ years of experience with PhD
  • 5+ years of experience in development and implementation of model-based OPC methods at a semiconductor foundry working on nodes including 130nm or more advanced.
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • US Citizenship Required: This position will require the holding of or ability to obtain government security clearance which requires U.S Citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Python or similar scripting language for handling large data sets composed of disparate data streams.
  • Experience using machine learning tools to sanitize large data sets, create code or utilities, and improve engineering workflows.
  • Calibre-based DRC and SVRF is preferred, along with KLayout and associated tools
  • Customer facing experience a plus.
  • Moderate familiarity with the Linux cli will be of value but not required.
  • Use of a modern revision control system such as local git vs github also will be of benefit.
