Job description

Job Summary The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the daily operation of the laboratory, including technician assignment, record keeping, and mandatory reporting requirements. Because the Authority's primary responsibility is to maintain twenty-four (24) hours of service to its customers, an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand and to accept overtime on short notice, during emergencies, or unusual conditions. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Monitors the water boiler water quality data, IDE product data, on line monitor data (dissolved oxygen and sodium analyzers) plant chlorination data and TPDES data on a daily basis Supervises staff in daily routine duties of boiler water condition Establishes daily rate of required chemicals and blow down Maintains good quality control of boiler feed water Supervises and records the collection of samples, analytical procedure and evaluation Supervises operations of several water treatment facilities as per established procedure Supervises control of all closed secondary cooling system Maintains laboratory, tests equipment and samples contents in a clean orderly and professional manner Coordinates all environmental monitoring and sampling required by WAPA TPDES discharge permits on a daily and monthly basis Monitors cooling water system on gas turbines Evaluates employees work performance and makes recommendations for improving and upgrading their skills Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety regulations Recommends or initiates personnel actions such as promotions, transfers and disciplinary measures; evaluates employee work performance Trains and orients new employees to the routines of the operations Maintains time and production records; recommends measures to improve production methods and equipment performance Analyzes and resolves work problems; may confer with worker's representatives to resolve grievances Performs all work in accordance with safety regulations, company policy and OSHA standards Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Thorough knowledge of safety practices, rules and regulations applicable in the workplace The proper personal protective equipment must always be worn when carrying out duties Must be able to work independently Must be available for weekend duty and overtime work as required Must have use of a home telephone or have immediate access to one Must maintain reliable transportation to the workplace Must maintain all Authority issued equipment (e.g. communication devices, vehicles) Thorough knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of chemistry Thorough knowledge of the equipment and procedures used in performing microbiological and other tests Thorough knowledge of various chemicals and their uses Knowledge of the principles of supervision Thorough knowledge of safety practices and procedures Ability to establish and maintain operational procedures for the efficient operation of a laboratory Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with all persons contacted during the course of work Ability to operate and utilize personal computers and related peripherals Must possess a valid V.I. driver's license Education & Experience Graduate of an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry or a closely related field and five (5) years of experience in laboratory work.
