Job description

Charter One works with schools across the country to provide all-inclusive education management services. At Charter One we pride ourselves on our thorough knowledge of charter school operations, academics, finance, human resources, information technology, marketing, and more. We handle the day-to-day work so that client school boards can focus on governance and policy issues to be sure that the vision and mission of the school are being carried out properly.


Wake Preparatory Academy is accepting applications for an Academic Counselor for the 2026-2027 school year. Candidates must be willing to undergo a background check.


The Academic Counselor supports and guides students through their educational journey, helping them navigate academic challenges, set educational goals, and make informed decisions about their future. The role involves working closely with students, parents, and school staff to develop personalized academic plans, provide resources and support, and ensure that students are on track for academic success and post-secondary readiness.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Student and course scheduling; academic counseling; identifying and tracking graduation requirements; awarding credit; college preparation; testing; scholarships; and post-high school transition.
  • Plans and executes initiatives related to enrollment outreach and campus tours to prospective families.
  • Plans and promotes programs that support student achievement and post HS transition.
  • Assists with processing student transfers.
  • Conducts course scheduling and guiding students to choose courses consistent with his/her interests, abilities and career plans.
  • Develops Education Career Action Plans for students assigned by AD Student Services.
  • Performs graduation planning, including developing diploma lists and identifying honor graduates, and scheduling and planning graduation events, parent night meetings, and awards ceremonies.
  • Prepares and validates lists of students eligible to graduate.
  • Meets with students on a routine basis to ensure on-track status to meet graduation requirements as outlined by district and state guidelines.
  • Ensure that students are aware of requirements for graduation and college admissions and assist with applications as needed.
  • Monitors and meets with “at risk” students as needed, and if appropriate, formulates plan of action for success involving students, parents and/or teachers.
  • Monitors students’ attendance and provides input related to credit withholding decisions for students with excessive absences.
  • Assists with coordinating and monitoring assessments for post-secondary education (e.g., PSAT, ASVAB).
  • Compiles and submits student College Career Readiness Indicator (CCRI) to the North Carolina Department of Education as appropriate.
  • Mails test results and student service documents as needed.
  • Cross trains as needed with other members of the Student Services Department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Pass applicable background check


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Five years’ experience in a 7-12 academic counseling environment
