Job description

Position Information New Hanover County is seeking a dependable and customer-oriented School Crossing Guard to join the Sheriff's Department. This is a part-time, temporary position working a maximum of 15 hours per week at a New Hanover County school. Under the general supervision of the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, the employee in this position is responsible for assisting children in crossing traffic intersections.

A School Crossing Guard requires vigilance in directing and protecting children during those hours when they are entering and leaving school. Other responsibilities include stopping traffic at crosswalks near schools for the safety of school children; assisting children crossing at assigned locations going to and returning from school; instructing younger children in the precautions to be taken when crossing the street; and a School Crossing Guard does not direct traffic. This position is part-time, requiring the applicant to serve as a School Crossing Guard as needed.

* * * * Hours: Must be available to work 1.5 hours in the morning and 1.5 hours in the afternoon Monday - Friday; not to exceed 3 hours per day or 15 hours per week. Hours will vary based on school location. Since this is a part time, temporary position, it is not eligible for benefits

Other Information: School Crossing guards will not direct traffic unless they are specifically trained in traffic control duties. This position is not a member of the uniformed New Hanover County Sheriff's Office and does not perform Deputy duties. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Ability to be firm yet courteous with the public; ability to get along well with children; ability to think and act quickly in emergencies; good powers of observation; dependability; able to walk and stand for extended period of time; must be able to perform duties in inclement weather.

Must have High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and valid NC Driver's License.
