What are some common challenges faced by professionals in offshore legal roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in offshore legal roles often navigate complex, cross-jurisdictional matters, including varying compliance requirements and rapidly changing regulations. Adapting quickly to legal systems different from one's home jurisdiction, and effectively communicating with clients and colleagues across time zones, are frequent challenges. Building strong organizational skills, staying updated on international legal developments, and leveraging collaborative technologies can help address these hurdles. Many firms also provide ongoing training and mentorship to support employees in overcoming these complexities.

Familiarity with legal research databases, document management systems, and compliance software is also essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate legal guidance, mitigate risks, and support complex cross-border transactions in dynamic offshore environments.

Job Description:

The Johnson and Johnson Global Legal Organization is recruiting for a Vice President, Law, Contracting Centre, located in New Brunswick, NJ.

The Vice President, Law, Contracting Centre is a senior enterprise legal delivery leader accountable for how high-volume transactional contracting services are designed, delivered, and continuously evolved at global scale. Operating as the single point of accountability for the Contracting Centre operating model, this role owns end-to-end transactional legal delivery across multiple procurement and commercial categories. The Contracting Centre serves as the primary delivery engine for routine and standardized contracting work, leveraging a right-shored, hybrid workforce including onshore legal leaders, offshore delivery teams and external contractors. This role is both strategic and operational: designing the future-state model while ensuring day-to-day performance across speed, quality, risk calibration, and cost-to-serve. The Vice President works in close partnership with senior Legal, Procurement, and Global Services leaders to industrialize contracting, increase predictability, and enable business velocity in a complex, matrixed multinational environment.

Strategic Accountabilities

Enterprise Transactional Contracting Operating Model: Design, own, and continuously evolve the end-to-end operating model for transactional contracting, including demand intake, work segmentation, risk tiering, escalation paths, and collaboration with retained legal experts. Serve as the senior accountable executive for global Contracting Centre performance.

Scaled Legal Service Delivery & Performance: Create and lead a global, multi-category Contracting Centre delivering high-volume procurement and transactional contracting. Establish and manage KPIs and SLAs covering cycle time, throughput, quality, and rework.

Demand, Capacity & Throughput Management: Implement enterprise-grade demand forecasting, workload planning, and surge management across internal, offshore, and third-party delivery resources.

Risk Segmentation & Quality Governance: Define and embed risk-based contracting frameworks, standard positions, templates, playbooks, and escalation guardrails to ensure consistent legal judgment and efficient delivery.

Digital & Process Enablement: Partner with Legal Operations and Technology teams to leverage Contract Lifecycle Management platforms, workflow, automation, AI-assisted contracting, and performance reporting.

Hybrid Workforce & Provider Strategy: Lead a hybrid delivery model of internal lawyers, contracted resources, and offshore teams; oversee third-party providers with clear quality and performance expectations.

Stakeholder Alignment & Change Leadership: Act as the senior legal interface for Procurement, Global Services, and transformation stakeholders; lead adoption of new service models and ways of working.

Future-State Evolution: Develop and execute a multi-year roadmap to expand the scope, sophistication, and business impact of the Contracting Centre.

Organizational Scope & Leadership

Leads the global Contracting Centre spanning onshore leaders, offshore delivery teams and external contractors.

Operates as a peer to senior legal leaders and partners closely with Procurement, Finance, Global Services, and Legal Operations.

Accountable for enterprise transactional contracting outcomes across multiple procurement and commercial categories.

Plays a visible leadership role within the Global Legal Organization's broader service-delivery and transformation agenda.

Partner with GSINC, the enterprise Global Simplification and Innovation in Contracting group, to implement policy, templates and process improvements.

Qualifications:

Law degree required; admitted to practice in at least one jurisdiction.

12+ years of senior level leadership experience in contracting centres, transactional legal services, legal shared services, or global legal operations.

Demonstrated success designing, scaling, or transforming centralized and/or right-shored legal delivery models.

Experience operating in large, complex, matrixed multinational environments.

Commercially minded operator with fluency in metrics, performance management, and continuous improvement.

Credible executive presence with the ability to influence senior legal, procurement, and enterprise stakeholders.
