The Provo Mayor's Office Internship Program is a temporary position that offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in local government while working directly with Mayor Marsha Judkins and Mayor's Office staff. This paid, part-time internship is designed to provide broad exposure to municipal government through professional mentorship and experiential learning opportunities across multiple city departments.
Unlike many internships that focus on a single area of work, the Mayor's Office Internship is intentionally flexible and tailored to each intern's interests. This position is ideal for curious, self-motivated individuals who are eager to learn how local government operates, explore potential public service careers, and gain practical professional experience in a collaborative environment.
ABOUT THE MAYOR'S OFFICE
The Provo Mayor's Office (currently under the leadership of Mayor Marsha Judkins) serves as the executive branch of Provo City government and is responsible for providing leadership, setting strategic priorities, and working collaboratively with city departments, the City Council, community organizations, and residents to address the needs of the community.

What is the compensation?

Pay: $15.00 per hour

What are the main duties?

  • Assist with communications, constituent correspondence, research, special projects, community engagement efforts, and other initiatives.

  • Build relationships with city leaders department directors, elected officials, and community stakeholders

  • Receive mentorship from Mayor Marsha Judkins and Mayor's Office staff.

  • Gain exposure to multiple city departments and functions through structured experiential learning opportunities

  • Attend in-person meetings, events, and experiential learning opportunities as part of the internship program.

  • Independently seek out work and learning opportunities.

  • Interact with internal and external stakeholders and community members using strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.

  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and good judgment in all work environments and outside of work as a representative of the mayor's office.

What are the requirements to apply?

This role is open to applications from interested applicants regardless of degree-seeking status.

  • Be at least 18 years of age by the start date of the internship.

  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States.

  • Be able to work up to 20 hours per week during the internship period.

  • Any experience that demonstrates an ability to perform the work.

Is there anything else I can prepare for?

Preference may be given to applicants who demonstrate:

  • Interest in local government, public service, community engagement, communications, leadership, or public administration.

  • Experience with writing, research, customer service, communications, social media, event support, user experience design, business, or community involvement.

What are the hours and duration of the position?

The Mayor's Office is open Monday through Thursday from 7am to 6pm. Interns will have flexibility to select their own working hours within the office's hours of operation, though interns are expected to remain consistent with selected hours and communicate with staff about working hours and expectations. Interns may work up to 20 hours per week. The duration of this position is between 4-8 months, lining up with university semesters. Interns have the ability to select a 4- or 8-month internship.

What are the physical and environmental factors?

This position involves regular interactions with the public in-person, over the phone, and in written correspondence sometimes in tense or stressful situations. This position also requires working in an office environment including long hours at a desk and looking at a computer screen with little supervision.

Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held on Monday, August 24, 2026. Applicants mustmeet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.

If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
